My first commute by MTB...

I bought a Trek 6500 in October, primarily for MTBing and off road, but will also be using it if it gets snowy. I agree with every single one of your pros and con, including the seat! Not sure if it was just over lubed or if they all come with the quick release needing tightening up

It's a brilliant bike all round though, and recommend it to anyone!

I got overtaken yesterday on my MTB by someone on a hybrid bike after they stayed behind me for a couple of miles - for the next 5 miles they kept checking to see if they'd lost me. They hadn't ;)

Interesting thread, like others I have been thinking about a MTB for when it gets really bad, I've been on fixed for commuting in all weathers all year round for the last few years, My thoughts are to get an old MTB, do a fixed conversion and use it for the bad weather.

Last year when the snow and ice came to Cambridge I swapped to the Mtb. Knobblies work really well in snow, not too bad on rutted ice but I cycle on the salted road with slicks in preference.

The 32mm slick tyres on my touring bike were next to lethal on snow with plenty of rear wheel slip. Will not be trying that again.

I've commuted twice in the past on snow on 23mm racing tyres. All I can say is it wakes you up and keeps you awake!! Oh and I can't go up Shooters Hill, don't know why! (by on snow I mean the bits outside the clear tyre tracks from the cars, we're not talking deep snow here, it is London after all!!)

I don't know how wide the slicks are on my MTB but I'm guessing they'll give me a lot more traction.

Did my 1st commute by MTB last night to test the bike out.

At first i thought it was undergeared as i was spinning the top gear on the flast and i never used the middle or granny ring, my time was within a couple of minutes of my roadie time .
I think the cold was masking how hard i was working as my legs know about it today .
