100% my fault as I was in a hurry and cutting corners.
Left the house in a hurry this morning. Hooked the panniers onto the rack and wrapped the bungie around to stop the flapping. Glanced down and saw the velco strap sitting there and ignored it thinking, "I don't need to fasten that. sure there's hardly any weight in it anyway"
About 45 mins later I'm bombing down the steepest and fastest descent on my route. Just before I get to a 90 degree bend there is a sizable bump where there has been some tarmac repair. I hit it fast and as I reached for the brakes....the rear tyre locks up...
Well I can tell you, nothing gets your attention as much as sudden fish tailing at warp speed. The rear tyre stepped out 90 degrees to the left, then through a bit of overcorrection it swung 90 degrees out to the right. I felt for a second like one of those speedway riders. All balls and no brakes.
Now as much as I was enjoying this stunting it dawned on me I wasn't really slowing down. Well, not enough to avoid the wall that was rapidly approaching. They say pride goes before a fall and all mine buggered off really quick. I dropped the bike on it's side and screeched to a halt. Actually, I may have continued screeching for a few seconds after I halted but I don't think anyone heard.
Turns out this is what happened. When I hit the bump it caused the pannier hooks to jump off the rail. The bungie (because I have it wrapped around the rack) then sucked it between the wheel and the inside of the rack. But here was the bad part: as the bag went between, the fabric got caught in the dsc rotor completely seizing the rear wheel.
So there's a lesson learned. Don't cut corners or the corners will cut you. Well, not cut exactly. But I've got a cool looking road rash from my wrist to my elbow.
Kinda smarts a bit.
