and discrepancies between the price on the shelves and the price on the till.

Today my youngest decided to expand his vast lego empire and so we bought 2 lego sets which came to 10p over the money he had saved. So I paid at the till - and it came up a pound more expensive. Went back checked the price on the shelf - and then back to the till where JL immediately refunded the £1 difference with an apology.

Ahhhh.............
Presto
Liptons
Fine Fare
Safeway

There must have been others that have gone by...

I used to test clothes for Fine Fare as a child... I had to wear them for 6 weeks and then return them for testing.

I remember my Dad used to shop at Budgens and possibly VG ... definitely something beginning with V.

My experience differs massively to yours. I've used the price-match many times when buying things from JL, and each time it's been done easily and cheerfully.

JL's target customer is middle class, middle Englander, they wear JL's awful grey and green clothes, drive a silver Mercedes and have kids called Tarquin and Gisella and they won't shop anywhere else.
I drive a silver Mercedes, and would probably be considered middle class, but have to plead not guilty to the rest. :-)

Gateway! OMG, Mum was forever nipping into Gateway in Heavitree (Exeter)
Bejam... long before the hell of Iceland
Normans (Cash and Carry)
Mac Fisheries (I think Arch mention them?)

Good times.

Jacksons...they were on every other street in Hull. Don't know about other towns.

Yes...sorely missed by me. We had them in South Yorkshire as well though not quite so populated. One was just up the road from me.

Now they have been taken over by Sainsbury's and I never visit my local branch anymore - it used to be a reasonable shop, now it never has anything in that I want

I've have friends that worked for Jacksons (one is a manager). He's told me the main reason for the Sainsburys takeover was because Jacksons had the 'small shop' expertise and premises they wanted. Hence now a good few 'Sainsburys Local' shops.

In Tesco a few months ago, they had the Rolo Donuts (in the bakery aisle) on offer £1 instead of £1.50 in the Salford Precinct branch.
So I picked up the last pack, and as it was busy, used the self service tills. They came up at £1.50, so a member of staff went to check the price, "Sorry, that offer's for the Rolo Muffins". A few minutes later after the item was voided, I remembered they don't, and never had sold Rolo muffins in that store! So I went back to check, and it was definately the donuts, not the non-existant muffins. And nearly every time I've been there, items come up at the wrong, more expwensive price at the till.

Just a few days ago, I bought the Weight Watchers chicken hotpot for £1.
Went in yesterday to find that it is on "offer" at buy 4 for £5 (£1.50 each seperatly). So paying £1 more is Tesco's idea of a special offer!

I'm not using Sainsbury's anymore because of the lack of security cameras near the bike stands, and chavs tampering with my bike - they'd actually tried to remove the pannier rack!

So I think Morrisons will be my main supermarket from now on.

Bejam... long before the hell of Iceland

My first job, after A levels, was with Bejam. Meant as a stop gap while I sorted my life out (flunked the A levels), ended up there for 12 years... It was Iceland by the time I left.

Anyone know, without Googling, why 'Bejam'?

No idea why it was called Bejam but I remembe when they first came out they were just rows of chest freezers with frosty chickens in and you had to scrape the ice off to see a price.

I was shocked to see fresh fruit in our local one. Not sure if the shoppers know what that is as they tended to get a bit of speed up on their trolly past the fresh stuff and stop at the pizzas.

Here's a list of supermarket chains including ones that are now defunct which are found at the bottom of the page.

I wouldn't be too upset if Waitrose joined the defunct list
I hope Dunelm Mill goes defunct soon....OK it's not a supermarket, and it's not a bad shop for what it is, but the name's a bit unpronouncable. Doesn't exactly trip off the tongue.

Don't knock Dunelm, they're great. Just because you can't pronounce their name easily you want them to go bust .................. There is nothing wrong with the name. There's no pleasing some.

The trick to good shopping is knowing exactly what you are looking at, especially when buying fresh produce. Would you know a point steak from a rump steak ? they both come from the same joint and cost the same but be labeled " Rump" but, there is a world of difference. Could you tell the difference between fish caught yesterday and fish caught the day before? The answer No ? Doesn t matter where you shop then as regards to quality. Where you shop is determined by other factors.
