@Moe - is it this one: Ripon Revolution

If so, it'll just be few bits; a gel, a bar, some wafer and a couple of sweets. Put them in the back pocket of your jersey or saddle bag.

Yes, it is..... I have since looked at the goodies, and yes, I think I'll be able to pop them in my jersey pockets! I'll only take one bottle with me so I can pop the other one on my bike... So, it's just the early start I need to worry about!! :hyper:
Thanks everyone!!

If it's a long ride as has been said before its so you can comfortably get back in good time. I did a 100 mile sportive last October and had a riding time of just under 6 hours and then you have to add on the 3 rest stops provided (which obviously you don't have to take if you don't want to......yeah right) one of which was lunch. You can see where the time goes, I was out all day.

So you can get round comfortably? Sunset in June is what, 11pm? And we have lights... just tell people when control will go home, stop all this early start silliness

Of course then you've got all the marshals, support staff, catering crews........do they want to be out till 11 at night?

Do they want to be there at maybe 6 to set up for a 7.30am start, then? These are commercial ventures and they don't usually ask the hired help. The timing isn't for the benefit of the riders either. It benefits the organiser somehow.

They wouldn't have to staff it to 11(aalthough I think it's debatable they could at up to £40 per rider). Just post the control closing time. The roads remain available.

Mate, I was offering some experiences of mine from my first sportive, not starting an argument. It is what it is, if you don't like getting up early don't sign up for the sportive. Most other posters on this thread have also tried to explain the reasons they start early, why pick a fight?

I'm not picking a fight. Just pointing out that the reasons suggested don't make sense. It's most likely about money.
It's not, cycling events have traditionally started early when the roads are quiet. Another reason is that spouses want their other halves home at a reasonable time on a Saturday or Sunday rather than being abandoned for the best part of the weekend.

Buy an alarm clock and have an early night, it won't kill you.

Last time I checked, most sportives took place on the public road network - so you can start and finish at whatever time you want, regardless of whether the checkpoints are open or not. It actually works out cheaper if you ride the event the day before, or the day after. But that's another story.
