My first tumble!

well out for a cycle this morning which was going great and boom! Whilst cornering the front end decided not to grip, so down I went. No skin left on my left elbow and left knee and my right shin is twice the size. Can't put any weight on my right leg at the moment. Still deciding whether to go to A&E to get it checked out.
Thankfully I was wearing my helmet as my head took a fair old thump as well!

On a plus side the bike is fine with only a miner scratch to the brake lever

Good news about the bike repairs can be costly, I would get checked out at A&E though just to be on the safe side its hard to asses the damage until you wake up next morning

Loss of front end traction on a bike is rarely recoverable. My first 'crash' day losing the front wheel whilst cornering on a wet drain cover. I was taking a short cut through a park because I thought it was safer! It was very slow and uneventful though - no damage to the bike or me, just my pride.

Any idea what caused it? Oil or diesel spill, loose road surface? Either way, GWS!

Go to A&E asap to get road rash cleaned up (roads are filthy) and especially if you have a swollen shin. Not wishing to worry but last year I needed IV antibiotics and surgery to clean out a huge infected haematoma over my tibia and there was concern about compartment syndrome which can be extremely serious

Your description of your shin sounds v familiar to mine. The pain pre op was horrific

Yes, bit of gravel on the road caused the front wheel to slide. It all happen so quickly I never stood a chance.
Scrapes are all cleaned up and are pain free ish, plenty of antiseptic liquid dabbed in the open wounds, but my shin is bloody throbbing, although I think it's just badly bruised. Being iced at the moment to see if the swelling goes down and then I'll decide about A&E.

Don't fanny around go to the hospital if it's full of blood ice won't do much. There's also a risk of fracture. They thought my leg might be broken even though I could just about stand on it

I'm glad you've decided to get checked over, especially as you say that you can't put weight on the leg.

Well just back from A & E no broken bones or fractures to report thankfully. Few grazes cleaned and dressed and badly bruised shin. Stay off it for a few days to a week pain killers and anti inflammatorys

Yes new helmet ordered as the outer casing has a small crack to it so god knows what my head would be like if I hadn't been wearing it. I did have a tendency not to bother, but never again!

Ice and elevate the shin. You could rub some arnica cream in too. I think it's mostly placebo effect but the gentle massage is good for dispersing any pooling blood / fluid

I damaged a helmet earlier this year, and got a replacement direct from the manufacturer (kask) at %50 rrp, I believe most manufacturers offer some kind of discounted replacement service in the event of accident damage.
