Need some help … Got an issue with Peroneal Tendinopathy ( PT ) ..maybe … . had a cortisol injection into my Achilles tendon last week … instant relief , which is good. Jumped into the swimming pool on Saturday, 1.2 meter since I was with the youngest grandson, and a bomb went off in my foot …He learnt some new words and told grandad off for them ..( he’s 8 ) .. the pain was intense, definitely a 7/10 …and seems to be about the outside of my heel … hence the thought of PT …. Anyone else been here .. and treatment … Please …

You thought about a medical professional, like a GP or a physio, rather than a bunch of internet people and the power of google ?

Couple of years ago my brother badly damaged his Achilles Tendon. Not a complete break but bad (I can't quantify properly). Fortunately less than 48 hrs later a family event and uncle who was a consultant in an unrelated discipline sent him immediately to A&E (no attending family reunion). Apparently a few hours longer injury to treatment and the delay would have meant surgery. He was just soon enough to have some horrible boot and rest for a recovery that took a long time.

Clearly a lot depends on how bad the injury is but do be aware that if it’s bad delays can impact treatment pathways.

Reason for my post (given your injury and his are likely very different) is to suggest seek medical assessment urgently as sometimes time is of the essence.

(Not trying to panic you and I can't give medical advice, just if it were me with 7/10 I'd be seeking professionals same/next day).

nb Achilles Tendons are something I take seriously. Several years ago I damaged mine maybe 5/10 at its worst. Saw a private physio in the end as I wanted to head off travelling. He gave me some exercises and said to keep pain 2/10 to 3/10 max. So I headed off hobbling round northern India for 3 months with a walking stick. But it's never properly recovered and today I sent it back to 3/10 - on cycle ride I pulled in to a passing place to allow an oncoming car to pass and starting off again must have pushed on pedal too hard or badly aligned and ouch ... still aching 6 hrs later.

My impression is it's sudden loads that it can't cope with eg walking and trip on brick or missing paving slab and sets it back.

They take a long time to properly recovered (if they ever do).

OP has asked about a condition he may have separate to a cortisol injection.

I thought it was pain in his heel which is where the Achilles tendon ends, I too have been suffering with a similar condition and my advice (medical) was 'iceing and rest. I 'tweaked' my Achilles by going up a ladder to trim some Ivy and it is bloody painful but as the Doc explained "You're no spring chicken anymore" (63) and injuries like these are to be expected. A mates mum tore one of her tricep tendons by reaching for the tap whilst in the bath to run some more hot water in, they couldn't repair the damage so she had to wear a support tube on her upper arm to hold the muscle in place or it hung down as one end wasn't attached any longer.

I have no idea if I have the same thing or not but I did have a pain around my ankle and it was very painful at time

It has happened quite a few times over the years but this was the first time I went to a doctor

He suggested rest and a padded help protector.
The one that seems to work for me goes on the back of my foot and down under the heel
It has a thin pad at the bottom to cushion my heel (and what is inside it) and it is like a wetsuit material up the side and back to protect the ankle and back of my foot

It has worked for the last few months

There is some evidence where people having being suffering from tears? or significant damage in their Achilles’ tendon but were told it was not bad enough for repair surgery. So they were advised to batter it so as to make it bad enough for surgery.
However this process actually repaired and strengthen the tendon.
I think this reported on a Scottish Rock climber site Dave Mcloud who is a bit of injury guru given he’s had one or two.

Had both Peroneal and Achilles tendon issues. Minor tears/ sprains as opposed to full on ruptures.

They are painful and usually due to a return to exercise following a long break and / suddenly increasing volume and intensity.

Short term: Rest and self-massage. Medium term: (when pain allows) body weight calf raises. Long term: weighted calf raises. This strengthens both tendons.

Also, a good exercise to keep them flexible is to sit on chair, leg straight out. Write letters from the alphabet using your ankle as the pivot point.
