Its Roy Pinks in Newport Pagnell. Not the closest to me, but service's superb, and I get looked after as I went to school with the proprietors son.

2 comfy old leather sofas, a coffee table, pile of bike mags, newspaper, coffee machine and a tray of biscuits probably costs them very little, but it's nice to sit in if they are serving someone else and it also acts as a bit of a meeting point for local cyclists, so draws more riders into the shop.

So simple, yet sheer genius.

I went to a well known frame maker in Croydon a few years back, to have a small repair done to a frame. They suggested I leave it with them for half an hour and "go to the cafe", pointing down the road. I said I'd just go and find a cash point, as I was without any folding. They explained the nearest cash point was a good distance away. "Here, have a tenner from the till".

When my work failed to deliver on a promised bike loan on time, my colleague was itching to pick up the bike that the lbs had fitted her for. I rang to offer to pay on my credit card, given it was my idea to get this woman on a bike. Result? 'Put yer card away, tell her the bike's here waiting for her, your word will do."

Hi all, has anyone here had any dealings with a cycle shop in Ripon north yorkshire called MOOGLU?
I'm not from that area, but have used a cycle shop called Moonglu  I have had cause to use it on one occasion & mine was a very positive experience. I was doing the Way Of The Roses & had a spoke break on my rear wheel, so on arrival in Ripon I called them. They said they were too busy to fix my spoke but could sell me one as I had the tools to fix it myself. On arrival at the shop, he saw my loaded tourer and asked if I was doing WOTR & then promptly said, bring the bike in & we'll do it for you. Cant remember what the charge was, but not expensive & did a far better job than I was likely to ever do.
maybe you just caught him on a bad day (we all have them ^_^)

17 miles isn't that far is it?
I agree tbh, but potentially I have moonglu as my "local" so I'd rather use that one, I do have a closer cycle shop 300yds from my home in Boroughbridge but it's really on any good for odds and sods, services and such like.

A long time ago a guy came into the bookshop where I was working and asked if we could get some books for him, they were pretty obscure titles and all came from publishers offering low discount, I ordered them. I later discovered that WH Smug had more or less told him to sling his hook so the guy was pleased at the service we offered. For the next year or so he came in late on a Saturday and spent £30 - £40 at each visit, he probably uses Google now but what he would do is read a book then order the bibliography for future reading - a real fanatic.
So my advice to any owner of a bike shop is: be aware of the N+1 phenomenon as someone buying a cheapo today may well have 4 Pinarellos and 16 wheels (all bought from you) in his garage three years from now.

I can fully agree with you on that one fella, I've done the same over the years with motorbikes, begin on crap knowing nothing and ending up spending a fortune going racing and having great knowledge now I do have a great passion for motor bikes.

Hi all, has anyone here had any dealings with a cycle shop in Ripon north yorkshire called MOOGLU?

I joined my companies cycleshceme, this company was on the list to use, I went to see them and thought they were very stand offish and judgmental towards me I wanted advise on everything from bikes to gear, the guy in the shop didn't seem bothered because I only wanted to spend defy5 money! I instantly took a disliking to this chap, needless to say I'm still getting my bike and accessories from him!!! Should I push to get some freebies? Cheers all

Argument and reason lost at that point.

You are using a cycle scheme, you are not paying tax or NI on it so you will be already saving +30% and the bike shop will be taking a 10% lost on the sale and you want them to throw more things in... Pay cash and then ask for discount or freebies

If you actually read into the cycle scheme you'll find that it's nothing like what it says on the tin.

The giant defy is £499, this has a cost to me about of about £8 pw before stoppages, this is the amount you don't pay tax and ni on! Roughly around £1.60pw saving.and not +30% of the £499 ticket price, also my company has to pay for it outright and claim it back over the year, at the end on the "hire period" (12 months) I have to buy the bike from the company at an agreed %,or continue to pay the £8 for another agreed period, there for the bike cost me about 92% of the actual ticket price over the initial 12 month hire period.
The cycle shop gets paid the full amount and looses nothing through the deal.
Nowhere in any form does it actually delve into this info on any web site that I've found.
It's a bit of a bullshit deal to be honest but! It gets me into a road bike.

CS is a salary sacrifice, it is deducted from your salary and so you pay no tax or NI on the value you have taken. I took a CS this year of £1000, I am paying £52 a month (roughly) and so end up paying back £670 with extended loan so I am not sure why you only get 10% unless you are on a very low wage which you wont be because you wouldnt be allowed CS due to dropping below the min wage.

Is it cyclesheme your company is using or are they doing it alone? Sounds odd they will keep charging you the loan amount even after the bike has been paid for over the 12 months. You would be better getting interest free credit over 12 months, least that way you own the bike.

Why did you think the LBS was judging you?

No tbh I'm not on a low wage thank god, but I have to work long hours for a flat rate

The tax and ni isn't taken from the value of the bike it's taken from the amount you pay back on a weekly basis, so 52x12=624
divide that by 52 weeks and that cost you £12pw,the tax and ni saving over a week @30% is £3.60! multiple it by 52(which is the hire agreement) and your annual tax and ni saving is £187.20 + 52x12=£811.20 if I'm correct this will leave a short fall at the end of the hire period of £188.80! This would have to be paid back at an agreed % back to your employer. It's an agreed % of the ticket price of the bike when purchased and not what you owe! Remember that
I'm certain that this is correct.
This is all saying that you are buying a bike with your sacrifice that is.
LBS,local bike shop?

It's just one of those shops that seems to really only be bothered about the high end buyer and not the every day working joe! That's my feeling on that anyway

I hope you don't think I'm trying to cause an argument?
Sorry if I'm going on here.
