My local Tesco's doesn't value cyclists

Just been to my local Tesco's to discover that they have built a new lobby ... I saw them installing it last week and thought nothing of it.

Today I have returned and found that having installed the new lobby they needed somewhere else to put their trolley parking:

Now where that puddle is there used to be 6 Sheffield stands. So what has happened to them - well I have no idea where 3 of them have gone but the other 3 they have rendered virtually useless (what with the hedge and the railings):

If they put loads of trolleys in that area then the cycle stands will now be hidden in this corner, making it harder for cyclists to find and easier for bike thieves. Whereas the previous place was in view of the cafe.

Now if they have had stands that were well used, would they need to have put in the planning permission application document that they were removing them? I've looked at the planning permission documents and it makes no reference that the trolley parking would go where they had existing cycle parking.

They have just expanded our local Tesco and I cannot see any bike parking spaces at all

Our local Aldi has them though

I also went to our police station a few weeks ago and they don't any cycle places at all to chain your bike onto, so I did mention this to the nice police lady inside

Tesco don't want you to shop on your bike. You can't carry as much as in a car so will not be tempted to buy stuff just because its on special offer.
I am much more sensible and focused when shopping with the bike. If it won't go in the panniers I can't get it home so it stays on the shelf. Even taking the trailer only gives me the capacity of one of the small 'handy shopper' type trolleys.
Having said that the local Morrisons has a reasonable amount of cycle parking.

(Hope thats not gone too P&L)

I think Tescos are fairly anti cycling but some of the local campaigners will have nothing of this opinion as Tescos installed 1 Sheffield stand in one minor store. Wow.

The competition commission forced somerfield to sell off a local store round here. Extensive works were carried out to the store, car park etc and conditions attached. Unfortunately the morons at the council got outdone by Tescos and rather than pouncing on a new development to get in some badly needed bicycle parking... nothing.

Just about every Tescos I've ever been to has been poor, poor in terms of number of stands/none, location and in terms of usually being stands that aren't tethered to the floor.

Sorry about the rant but it gets particularly comical when you see cushy little smoking rooms or covered trolley parks built.

There are a load of supermarkets that are carp for bikes.... our local Morrisons has a 4 bike park, right next to where the staff smoke, and it's well out of view of the store and pedestrian traffic....

That's the received wisdom.

Per shopper (apparently) cyclists actually buy more (according to continental research) because they make more frequent trips to the shop, and so give the retailer more chances to tempt them (so the theory goes).

The store which is between me and groove65 has 2 bike racks. One is under shelter and by the road, although I don't like that one as you cannot see it from anywhere in the store.

The other is right outside the main windows, so everyone stares at you when you realise you are a pack of bagels over your capacity. (Guess how I know :welcome: )

So how did you gt them home? Consumed (and regurgitated)? bar ends through the hole? You've got me curious now.

Subtle but mildly resourceful use of a piece of velcro whose usual role is to hold the lock.

cyclists are not the only things that Tesco don't value. they don't value their customers, they don't value their staff, they don't value good service, they don't value keeping the shelves stocked up.....

in fact all they do value are profits, profits and more profits :welcome:

Curiously (and don't get me wrong - and I don't have shares in them!) my local Tesco's is quite adequate for cyclists with a row of six sheffields. They are quite often used though never 'full up'. We find that two bikes with rear panniers just about take the contents of one of their small trolleys.

It's our local Waitrose that doesn't have proper cycle parking. Ironic, that?

Back at Tesco's, my commonest gripe is that there's a chronic shortage of the smaller trolleys and a superabundance of the huge family-sized ones, which are useless to cyclist-shoppers (as well as giving me a bad back :welcome:). Evidently they want you to fill one of these huge monstrosities to the very brim, before unloading it into the 4x4...

But I also have moans about them being out of stock of an essential item just when you need it. Tomato puree, say, or plain flour, or margarine.... I don't know what sigma-multiplier they apply when re-stocking, but it can't amount to much...

I just took my bike into the police station the other day. I was going to go to sainsburys in the evening last week and claim that I'd forgotten my lock and just needed to pick up a few things and just take my bike around with me

Was that the very same piece of Velcro that I suggested for the sawn-off, but you never used by improvising the bottle cage instead? I am hurt that my original design component has been prostituted in this manner.
