I bought an 11-31 to get me through the tour de Yorkshire sportif, and it made a big difference on the steepest climbs. This is with a 105 short cage mech. It claims not to support such a fat cassette but turns out, it ain't necessarily so.

I'm thinking about a 12/32 cassette for my Secteur next time I replace chain and cassette (some steep hills around here that are getting steeper with age!).
It is currently on a 12/26, I think - without being able to check just now. Would the current Tiagra medium cage derailleur be able to cope?

Not according to what my LBS told me.
There are some knowledgeable people on here (that excludes me )and I'm sure someone will answer that.

I use a medium 105 cage and it takes a 32 cassette no problem.......sure the tiagra would be the same

If not the tiagra 12/30 would be a big difference on what you have now and widely available for about £20

From memory I think newer 105 handle 32 teeth, but the older ones officially maxed at 28, but most could just do 30 depending on the hangers length.

Have a look at the back of the derailier and there will be a part number on. 5700 os the old ones, 5701 or later is the new.
