Probably akin to the kind of thing some of us did when we were kids in the 60's - wedging bits of cardboard in-between the spokes to make motorbike noises!

My whimsical nature sometimes gets the better of me.

Normal service has been resumed.

I picked up a cheap set of unbranded rubber pedals the other day - I have to say that I much prefer them to the alloy MKS ones that were fitted when I bought the bike, despite being heavier.

Ive now ordered some better quality NOS Union rubber ones to go with the Stronglight TD2 chainset (3/32 34T) that should be fitted over the next week or so.

Ive been swapping back and forth between the Nitto cruiser and moustache bars and have concluded the following:

The cruiser bars are probably the most comfortable ones Ive ever had. However, I certainly dont feel as connected to the bike using them and steering feels quite vague. The difference in air resistance whilst peddling against wind (which is common when you live by the sea) is noticeable and more tiring. I think that they suit really low gearing - around 55" as a top gear on the SA3. They make the Guvnor look like a traditional roadster - a little like a Sovereign with the mudguards and chain case removed. Whether this is a good or bad thing is down to individual taste I guess.

The moustache bars make me feel like I am sitting in the bike, the steering feels more direct and against the wind or downhill there is way less air resistance. Combined with the short reach stem I dont feel too hunched over or stretched out. Climbing hills feels easier. Higher gearing feels better which for me is a 63" top gear. I think that they look great and are in keeping with the path racer aesthetic.

They are both great bars in my opinion and a big improvement on the standard ones. The moustache is my current favourite.

Just to add - I suspect that I am in a minority as regards the original leather handlebar grips. I really dont like them, they feel too big and clunky to me though I do admit they look nice. I much prefer the vintage style (and way cheaper!) rubber grips shown below.

Those brake levers, are begging to have the black paint stripped and the newly exposed alloy polished.

I agree and have been thinking about alternatives for a while. I saw some of these fitted in a picture on Facebook - not as nice as the above ones but more my price level!

Frame sizing - yes, that old chestnut!

Someone on one of the FB Guvnor groups has suggested that I my 22.5" frame is too small - indicated by the amount of seat post and stem showing in pics of my Guvnor.

I am 5'11" and have an inside leg measurement of 33". I find the standover height to be about right on the 22.5" in that my delicate parts are in light contact with the crossbar when astride the frame. I fear that another 2" might be a little dangerous as regards my gonads!

The last touring bike I owned - a Dawes Galaxy - was 23.5", which I thought was the right size. Obviously the Guvnor has a higher bottom bracket.

Pictures from a number of Google searches seem to indicate that the amount of seat post that I am showing isnt that unusual.

Any comments / observations?
