I think its more that they have been topped, which is poor practice. Pollarding is done on a cycle, so if its for say basket weaving it may be done annually, or walking sticks from sweet chestnut every 3 years. They have just been cut back very hard. Perhaps they did not fit in with the location.

Thanks for that info. Learning a lot today. It is one of our best stopping places. The shade from the trees in summer, the lovely little stream with its waterfall. Idyllic.

Look what someone did to two lovely Weeping Willow trees. One of our favourite butty stops.

Dunna worry. It looks really harsh when willows are cut back like this but they'll come back as good as ever and sooner than you might expect.
