My sons 10th birthday/first road bike

We got our son a road bike for his 10th birthday, a Dawes Espoir 16'' frame with 26'' wheels. He was absolutley over the moon with it, he had the biggest smile on his face i've ever seen! We also got him a wedgie bag filled with the usual stuff a cyclist needs and a cycle computer. Nanny has bought him a helmet, bottle cage and bottle. I took him out for 20 mins, and he is getting the feel of the bike o.k, just getting used to the gears, brakes, different riding position. We are going out properly in a while once nanny has been round.

Nice bike but the seat's too low and you need to twist those handlebars forwards a bit, the brake hoods need to be more or less horizontal.

I have made adjustments a couple of times, i have now twisted the handlebars more forward. The seat seems to be the right height for my son, his leg is almost straight when his foot is on the pedal.

We have just been out for an afternoon ride. He loved it, chipping along at a nice pace. We stopped for a celebratory ice cream after several miles then cycled back home down some country lanes with a couple of steep hills so i could see him use the gears. He has already asked if we can go out after dinner for an evening ride and of course i said yes!

Now tall is your son ? - my 9 1/2 year old is on the smaller side, but would love a road bike. A 20" MTB fits him fine at the moment !

Sensible tyres on it for a kid - ok for curb bouncing......

Just measured him and he is 4 ft 9". Yes the tyres look like they can take a curb or 2

although i have told him that he shouldn't treat this bike like his mountain bike...

Bless him though, he's been out on and off most of the day and has clocked up 33 miles! I think he'll be sleeping soundly tonight
