Nothing wrong with your position IMHO. I *personally* would've pulled into that gap after the first beep, but that's only because I live by the maxim that it's better to have an idiot in front of you, rather than behind! And that driver (and his mate) are definitely idiots.

I would have, but they were pretty close on my wheel, and I didn't think I could do it safely.

Well in law you're not obliged to answer police's questions, and that's a principle I'm very wary of getting rid of. So he was asked who the passenger was, and replied "no comment" which he is entitled to do.

It should also be noted that their pathetic arguing cost them more time than if they had simply sat behind you and waited until they could pass. This sh!t is what really puts people off cycling, and the fact that the Met police / CPS seem incapable of prosecuting these cases means that this behaviour is never challenged by authority.

Yes. That's exactly how our justice system works and not just for cycling incidents, and trust me, it annoys no one more than us, but as Ben points out, I'm not sure what the 'better' option is.
