I received an email newsletter today from a local cycling coordinator for an NHS Trust. He informed us that the theme for this year's bike week is 'Falling in love with everyday cycling' and he then challeneged us to volunteer our personal reasons for why we did...

Here's my go... let's hear yours:

I love the simplicity of the open road and two pedals turning.
I love being powered by my own steam, but still covering 100+ miles a day.

I love that I can cycle to work in 25 minutes, and if I drive the same route it takes 25 minutes.
I love breezing past traffic jams while car commuters sit frustrated in their hot, toxic boxes.
I love the look of surprise of the eyes in the rear view mirror, when it’s their car holding up a bike.
I love that cycling to work saves me a fiver in petrol alone every day.
I love being the ‘crazy guy in the office’ because I cycle when it rains.
I love arriving in work feeling fresh, alert and ready for the challenge.

I love that cycling keeps me fit, without the drag of finding time to go to the gym.
I love that a mid-morning cake just replaces calories I’ve already burned.

I love being self-sufficient.
I love fixing a puncture by the side of the road.
I love derailleurs, sprockets, headsets and bottom brackets.
I love the noise of a loud, clacky freewheel, and the whistle from a deep section rim at speed.

I love being on my own on the road; Solitude.
I love the loneliness and pain of time trialling and feeling utterly spent.
I love being with my mates on the road; Understanding.
I love 100 mile club runs; club mates, club banter, Belonging.
I love touring with my best pal; tents, panniers, beers, bikes & memories.

I love passing other cyclists with a wave or a nod.
I love seeing a blinking light in the distance and chasing it down to say hello.

I love the silence of a country lane.
I love tailwinds.
I love long, winding climbs, and fast, heart-stopping descents.

I love being the minority, because it means our secret is still ours for a little longer.

I know, I was having an out of context tongue in cheek moment.

Although being reminded of my last puncture (outside a Uni, hungover to f*ck, with good looking students passing by) was quite upsetting!
