not sure if I can take a screen shot and post it up here without copyright issues...
I see it is not tarmac from the google road cam but it is hardcore from the looks of it and there is no issue pushing a bike along this section (very short section). -

look at the satelite images for Rockingham close where it is at its nearest to School Lane on that 90 degree bend where it becomes Silver Lane pedestrians can get through. The estate was full of these routes when we went around it back in July last year. We were looking at a house on the very outer edge which was basically on one of these routes...

yep that's the one - has it got that bad? makes me glad I didn't move there! chose the end of a single track lane in the countryside instead. just have to wash the bikes every single time I use them instead!

for me, these are what cycle routes should be about, nice linkways to avoid major traffic , be shortcuts, where you get a big advantage by being on the bike... but not needing a whole new infrastructure .. theres *loads* if you check carefully, but most are wrecked by not being fit for purpose..

i'd certainly go down there, rather than touch a motorway junction..

A bloke I chat to occasionally on the commute has spoken to some Sustainable Transport body in Warrington to see if the surface can be dressed or whatever...

Yea, i tried that route yesterday near rockingham close, it was a quagmire, bike got covered in mud, well mad, spent an hour cleaning it today. I am going to take the pathway near gorse covert that goes around pestfurlong moss hill.

first proper commute tomorrow morning.. wish me luck

I don't know the path you mean but I know Pestfurlong Hill - you can see for miles up there!

thanks moss. When i got up this morning and saw that my car was frozen over, i thought ooo noo ,what the hell. then went bugger it, so took the plunge, boy was it cold lol. Also got a wee bit lost but managed to find the route around pestfurlong hill, was a bit muddy where it joined silver lane but only for a few metres so nothing major.

Took me about 50 mins to do 8 miles, which aint that fast but considering its my first commute, it was dark and cold, and i wasnt sure where i was going i dont think was too bad.

hi ive just read this thread and I know the roundabout your on about and for me Id say to get off the bike and cross over on foot if you have to. I wouldnt ride all the way round. Is this not practical.?
If there was no traffic Id cross to the triangular central reservation on the approach then cross to silver lane without dismounting.

thanks oilyormo, i a found a cut through onto silver lane by going around pestfurlong hill, but on the return route i go to the end of silver lane and join birchwood way as i am heading the correct direction so do not need to go around the roundabout.
