N.B. The bike bus isn't running this year also be aware that the road at Dounreay will be subject to closure for periods while materials are being moved off site.

That road closure is no issue; the B-road running a little inland is the preferred cycle route.

Good idea to avoid the East coast road, lots more traffic than the official cycle route, which is equally bonnie.

400 miles on the route you are taking should be fine. Leisurely even.

I did the NC500 at the end of July over 7 days with two panniers,tent on the back rack and a handle bar bag.If i was to do it again i would prefer to be supported for 5-7 days or with the load i had 8-10 days.It is tough going but the scenery on the West coast is a joy to cycle through and if you can catch the right weather even better.The East coast road i found to be okay to cycle but busy at times.If your not bothered about doing the official route i would come down the centre via Altnaharra/Lairg to Inverness as i have gone that way when doing lejog .
