Peds have the right of way in the sense that if they're already crossing or in the road as you approach, you should give them right of way. I.e you can't dangerously swerve or crash into them thinking that it's your road and their fault they're in it. Same for drivers. On my driving lessons back in the day I was bollocked for turning into the mouth of a road where a pedestrian was about to cross.
.

Correct on this one. Peds have ROW if they are crossing the entrance to a minor road which you are attempting to turn into, and likewise, if they are crossing on the other side of the give way and you are attempting to join a main road - you have to give way. Go back to the guideline about having a duty of care to oneself, then they can't step out into the flow of traffic without having to accept some responsibility for their actions.

PS Pedestrians do have right of way, no matter how dangerous. I just grin 'nearly' if anyone does that.
I think you mean, priority.

I have a rule of not confronting anyone (driver or ped) at night because you have a much lower level of safety because less people are around.
I dont mind having an abuse war in the middle of the day down a main road though.

You should try not doing it all the time.. People won't jump in straight away if someone starts laying into you.

I'd say in this case as per the OP's post, Rule 7.D comes into play as the ped stepped out in front of him and not already crossing:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070108

7 D. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Look all around again and listen. Do not cross until there is a safe gap in the traffic and you are certain that there is plenty of time. Remember, even if traffic is a long way off, it may be approaching very quickly.

With regards to priority:

8 At a junction. When crossing the road, look out for traffic turning into the road, especially from behind you. If you have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, you have priority and they should give way (see Rule 170).

It's probably best to just ride on, if you can. I had a bloke step out in front of me without looking. I managed to avoid him, but he shouted 'Only buses are allowed down here!'. He was wrong on this, but I laughed and rode on rather than engage in a pointless quarrel.

He should be grateful I wasn't a bus.

Nope, the mistake was to shout abuse when we were clearly both in the wrong.

shouting abuse requests a response...to which I merely obliged.

You went back, it got ugly as it does. Not worth it.

Tried putting my point over, even with female drivers, just doesn't work. No one will back down even if they are wrong. Death stare and get on with the ride.

Jez the ped probably nearly shat themselves, but it ain't worth going for round two. It's been funny when I've hauled the bike up and the ped has jumped, or done the silly dance, iPed equipped as well.

I have begun to feel like this is better than speaking to them as they can see that you are annoyed but not in a confrontational way.

Was it something like this?
