when i was a kid, they went Nee-nah. Only on American Tv shows did they go Woo-woo (wah-wah is an effects pedal)... then our UK sirens started to go woo-woo too, and more recently some of them have that strange nee-nah-woo-woo-short-wave-radio-interference-nee-nah-woo-woo-electro-crackle sound.

The 'short wave radio interference' and 'electro crackle' sounds have been shown to help other road users identify the direction that the siren sound is coming from. Particularly helpful in urban areas where the echoes and deflections from buildings can make it hard to locate the source of a siren.

It was introduced initially by the ambulance service but is being gradually rolled out across all emergency services as vehicles are changed and upgraded.
It's been in for the best part of 20 years with the Police. The long wails are particularly useful in rural areas.

Bring back huge big bells mounted on the front bumper.

Police apologised to members of the criminal fraternity who may have been within earshot of the siren test and may have been unduly alarmed.
