By rights, it should be nee-nah.
But not it's ooOOOOOOOoooooo- waAAAAaaah-waAAAAAaaah waaaAAAAAaaaaah- weeeoooweeeoooweooo etc.
I blame Nina Nannar.
It's been in for the best part of 20 years with the Police. The long wails are particularly useful in rural areas. The 'short wave radio interference' and 'electro crackle' sounds have been shown to help other road users identify the direction that the siren sound is coming from. Particularly helpful in urban areas where the echoes and deflections from buildings can make it hard to locate the source of a siren.
It was introduced initially by the ambulance service but is being gradually rolled out across all emergency services as vehicles are changed and upgraded.
Pretty sure I've heard that through Miss Goodbody's cellar door. What about the one that goes "sshwwwoooooaarrr thumpp sshwwwoooooaarrr thumpp"
