New bike day

New to me. A refurbished Boardman e-bike. I'm not a huge fan of Halfords but the guys in the Carlisle branch seem pretty good. And there's a 14 day money back trial period so I've got a good chance to try it out.

It's far too hot for riding this afternoon so I've just been along the road to test it out and try to get the seat height right. Hopefully I'll get out this evening to see how the motor copes with the hills around here.

Is that the Fazua motor version, that can have motor and battery removed from downtube?

Congratulations, that looks lovely. I was planning to get one of those last year, but the local Halfords screwed up and it had a duff battery... and so did the other one they had in stock.
It was a shame because the bike fitted me and I liked the idea of a removable battery and motor - two bikes in one.

Yes, it is. Assuming it's ok & I keep it I'll be seeing if I can get the cover that fits when you remove the battery.

Well, it's back at Halfords waiting for a new control unit for the motor. The on/off switch has broken. At least it's being done under warranty as the unit is £125.

That's not a good sign it's only two days old.

It's a refurbished bike so a bit older than that. The mechanic was surprised when I walked in - he says he rarely has the Boardman's back with any issues.

Well it went back today & I'm having my money back. They fitted a brand new control unit last week. The way the weather has been today was the first chance I've had to ride it properly. The assist level repeatedly changed randomly throughout the ride. It even did it while I was standing chatting to a passer-by.

So during my 14-day money-back period it spent 4 days back at Halfords, I've ridden it 4 times - about 35 miles - and I've driven over 100 miles shuttling it back & forwards to Carlisle.

Given the bother I've had with the Swytch bike kit I ordered (still waiting for the money back there) I think someone is trying to tell me I don't need an e-bike!

I'm amazed that hasn't been made more common knowledge really, or that manufacturers don't warn about this on their packaging. I was taught many years ago to clean the manufacturing gunk from any metallic moving parts you buy, not just for bikes either just anything generally, if it has that manufacturers slop on it, clean the lot off and replace with something better quality, I even do bearings when I buy new ones!
The stuff they coat them in is more for protection from rust during shipping or long periods of storage than lubrication and is always stupidly sticky, it's no wonder so many brand new bikes end up malfunctioning after a few months, especially with the budget brands, it's kinda one of my pet hates with new bikes because it's one of the things that leads to people not using their bikes after a year because it all runs like crap!
