A mate has a Skoda Yeti and swears by it, ultra reliable, cheap to run and it can carry loads of stuff if needed.
Failing that a Skoda Octavia / VW Golf / Seat Leon* estate should satisfy your needs.
Or for something left field but amazingly practical, a Citroen C4 Cactus, although these will currently be right at the top of your budget. They look great though. :okay:

The Qashqai is known as the "CashCow" within Nissan circles as they make so much money from them.

A used roomster may still work given the OPs budget

I asked this question and ended up with a peugeot 5008. Works for me. Took 5 of us and a load of stuff and 4 bikes to France last summer. 1.6 engine as well: Fascinating.

Theres supposed to be a new Roomster appearing this year LINK. Badge engineering though and as it'll be van based not car based as the old one is I do wonder what the comfort level will be like. The Fiat Doblo shows it's van roots.
Roomster looks like it's gone a bit sensible looking too, like the Fiat Multipla did. No more Lancia Stratos shape front windows

I'm sure a new one would be more than 10k. Indeed, most yetis that aren't bog basic spec and haven't been to the moon and back will be too I think

Suppose that makes sense to them as it would probably take sales off the Yeti anyway. And why buy a new Roomster if you can just buy a VW Caddy combo, which looks more or less the same anyway.

Some advice please from anyone with a knowledge of cars or a good car!

Although my lovely 04 Ford Focus is still going with no real issues, my plan at some point in the next couple of years is to treat myself to a new car but I don't know what would suit my needs as someone who knows very little about cars out there!!

Myself and partner have talked about essentials for my new car which include:

Space for a dog(or two)
Space for a kid(or two)
Good for a Bike rack (if possible the tow bar one because we think they look safer/easier than our current strap-to-the-boot-jobby which never sit well on my Focus)

The OH was suggesting more of a 4x4 like Nissan Juke/Qashqai but someone at work suggested an estate car is a good solution but not sure what else is worth looking into!

Any suggestions?

Yes.

Not sure if this helps or even if used examples have this feature but at the recent bike show there was a Honda FRV and CRV which had "magic seats" (their term, not mine) which fold upwards from the base and backwards (yeah I didn't explain that too well). There was a bike a couple of suitcases in there.

Not sure if that's something you might be interested in or what other cars have extra versatile seat configs.

All Honda Jazz(es) have this feature, as does the Civic from 2006 onwards. In my Civic (07) I can just get my 26" wheeled bike in if I put the fork legs in the door pocket, so a bike with 700c wheels might not fit. Obviously later cars might be wider, as cars all seem to get fatter with age
