A couple of weeks ago I fitted a new chain on to my winter bike, it wasn't worn out, but would literally rust over night, despite being cleaned & wiped over with an oily rag and kept lubed.
With the weather being so bad I haven't been out for a ride since fitting it, I got a KMC light 9 speed, fully nickel plated & what a difference, no more noise, smooth gear shifts & no coming off the front chainring, what also surprised me with the original chain was despite being looked after, it was full of stiff links, no wonder it sounded awful, but it was the silence that really surprised me, the original was supposed to be a Shimano, it must be special production at a cost of 2p for a mile of it specially for bike manufacturers to cut a costs !, so if you are considering a new chain, get one of these, they are expensive, but well worth it.
