I cycled last year and my route was mainly straight and simple. Due to a change in my business I'm now on a hilly/bumpy route.

Today was day two and I haven't stretched as much as i think i need to for this route.

Its hard getting back into it after so long off the road. I do love it and i know i need to build up my confidence on the main roads with huge trucks and those with white-van-man-who-cant-signal syndrome.

I would really like advice on breakfast. Currently i leave the house without a bite, drink approx 500ml water en route and eat when i get to work. I set off at 6.30am but i'm up much earlier. Would it help me to have a nibble before i go and if so, any suggestions?

What length is the ride, etc?

Basically do what works for you, for most of my rides its a light breakfast a bowl of cereal but when I have been away for really long hilly rides (the Marmotte and the Peaks) I have joined in with my mates in having a longer sociable breakfast and more.

Here's a link to almost the same thread I created a few years back- with an array of responses.
I currently eat before hand, ride 12 miles and just have water on the ride and I'm ok until lunch- but that's what a few thousand miles of experience does to your body.

I ride 13 miles into work , I don't have water when riding and don't have breakfast until after getting to work. Each to their own though.

I ride 10 and a bit miles to work, no breakfast, a mouthful of water, none on my ride and eat 2 boiled eggs when I get to work!

Everyone is different. I do 40 - 45 miles in a morning on a cup of tea and then eat when I get to work - normally a couple of packs of those porridge breakfast biscuits and a few pieces of fruit. I have a 750ml drinks bottle with me that hardly gets touched at this time of year, though for some reason I drank the lot today.

My route is pretty flat and I am not the fastest person, maybe if I had a bowl of porridge before I set off I would be faster!

Hi all,

It's 7.3 miles, lots of uphill, road route.

Thank you for the thread, some great advice. I think i prefer breakfast when i get in. I do drink lots while riding but i've just got over kidney stones so it's a good habit. I have to monitor my sodium daily due to this.

Boiled eggs is a nifty idea!

8 miles and a leisurely morning at home before. Two Weetabix currently and porridge during Winter. Mug of tea too. Used to do about three miles with nothing but I give myself loads of time now and have another brew at work too. Nothing while on bike either. Each to their own. Gez

fluid helps, but not too much .

I have a bowl of branflakes and a coffee about 30 minutes before I leave for my 8 mile ride thats not particularly hilly.

I recall reading somewhere that you need fluid to help the body get the energy to the muscles. might be rubbish though
