I've just picked up a new rear wheel. It has cartridge bearings.

I've noticed that when I turn the freewheel, it's binding very slightly at the same point on every rotation.

Is this normal and will settle down, or should I be concerned?

It's possibly just the dust seals on the bearings and should settle - if it was the cage/inner-race/outer-race/ball bearings(they all rotate as one) it wouldn't just bind at one point. I wouldn't be to concerned User.

If in doubt though, change them - they're only a couple of quid each.

Can you feel any play in the axle at any point in the rotation?

I would expect new cartridge bearings, even cheap ones, to be silky smooth.

If it were the seals it should settle pretty quick so check again after getting some miles in on the wheel.

A lot of freewheels don't spin particularly freely ime.

Put it all together and spin the cranks backwards. If the freehub is knackered, it will normally 'catch' and not spin very well. But it doesn't anything unusual
