Lovely stuff
Location
That London
A road bike/tourer with large tyres and a good tread. 700c x 35 would be ideal, like Continental Tour Plus or Schwable Marathon Plus. My morning commute takes in a stretch of canal tow path and I have the Continentals on my tourer. Hope that helps and welcome to the forums!

I have a Dawes Karakum which is a touring bike and the tyres I use are 700x30 so less rolling resistance

Welcome

Is it the canal through MK you cycle on? Ive only really used it as far north as Stoke Bruerne and as far south as Berkhamstead, but I dont think I would have liked it at all on a road bike, some parts are pretty bumpy/slippy even on a hybrid.

I think which bike depends on how much money you're thinking of spending and what surfaces you plan to ride on

Yes I've riden through MK but not as far as St.Bruern. Funnily enough it was Berko I was thinking of when I wrote that comment - I rode to Hemel Hempstead in twilight, it was sooo bumpy that I got burnt up by a local jogger - he was skipping along like a gazelle while I was wrestling with the potholes in the dwindling light and trying to stay on dry land! One of the longest journeys of my life,,,,,,,

Ta for your comments, everyone's real nice on here

Thought it might be, parts of that canal path are awesomely bad. Last time I left the canal and went through Ivinghoe right past the Beacon then coasted most of the way to the Old Mill pub in Berko for a few then got a cheaty train home  Be sure to share any good routes you find

I live very close to Stoke Bruerne, and know Wolverton well (my bro lives there).

Go visit Roy Pink Cycles in Newport Pagnell and speak to Roy or Akex. They'll give you good advice, and take the time to talk to you, and you can have a fee coffee and biccy in their shop lounge.

canal paths and trains etc...why the need for drops...maybe mtb will do the job....clearly you need at least two bikes here...a full on carbon flash as you like bike and a mountain bike for the trains and paths of doom.

Drops? Need for speed.
2 bikes - you are so right, came to that conclusion yesterday when I was talking to chapie in local bike shop (FYI, Chaineys, Leighton Buzzard),,,, it's nice to be understood
