In our youth myself and a couple of mates used to have a unwritten policy between us that we'd never walk past a pub without going in it and having at least a half.

On our long pub crawls around districts of Bristol it used to lead us to some 'interesting' hostelries !

We still to this day try to visit pubs that we've never visited people, although with the introduction of family ties our visits are becoming less and less.

I managed to visit a 'new pub' yesterday, The Avonmouth Tavern near the docks / railway station in Avonmouth.

A traditional proper pub with a good selection of drinks and and eclectic mix of customers.

Don't see them often. Great little micro pub opened in Herne Bay recently though. Good beer, record player in house and you can inflict your music taste on others. 😁

Yes. Been in one today. Saddlers Cat in Manchester. Great selection of beers, live band and good food. Off to another shortly, Pixel Bar in NQ Manchester

Last time I was working in Avonmouth I ended up staying in a pub on the docks. There was a funeral going on downstairs which broke out into a fight once everyone was well oiled.

That was probably The Royal Hotel, the only pub I've yet to visit in Avonmouth.

Wow; that place looks very familiar and I'm pretty sure it would have been one of the many pubs in Avonmouth that I visited late May/early June 1980 when I was on a ship at Avonmouth docks (mv Taupo, a former New Zealand shipping co. ship which was taken over by P&O, who I worked for. We took her from lay-up in Dubai, to dry dock in Singapore, to New Zealand for a full load of frozen lamb, to Pitcairn Island to drop off their monthly supplies, through the Panama canal, then to Avonmouth).
The port Police were regular visitors to our ships bar, and I remember telling them on the eve of my 18th birthday (May 1980) that if they wanted to nab me for under age drinking, then their last chance was that night, at whatever pub we were headed for. Great days - and never had a spot of bother with any of the Avonmouth locals.
