Hi Haz :welcome:. Excellent work fettling the bike yourself. If the thought of being clipped in does scare you, how about something like this (link) as a compromise until you feel happy with it?

My cycling friends said to just go for it and practice unclipping and clipping whilst propped against a wall or on a stationary bike, so I've taken the plunge with spd's - previously the pedals had a strap to secure in a cleat-less shoe which looked like it could be irritating at traffic lights etc.
I did have some help with setting up the bike! An extra pair of hands was super useful for things like wheel alignment and brake adjustment, but I wanted to make sure I knew how to do it all myself.

If you're going for it then I shan't interfere. I've always felt happier with flat pedals myself so I can't really advise on the benefits of clipless, but you'll find plenty of enthusiasts on here who can help with any queries.

That's still good. Lots of people don't have a clue when they first get going but you're getting hands on from the start, which is massively helpful.

I hope it all goes well.:bravo:

Hello :hello:
I'm mike, I live down in Southampton, my steed is a sweet little number of a hybrid that I named Monica, I have covered 645 miles on her in the 5 months I've had her from new (the standard tyres were worn out by 500 miles), the furthest I have ridden in a day is just shy of 50 miles, I have Asperger's Syndrome, currently I'm unemployed (hopefully that will change soon) I'm a qualified cycle mechanic to cytech level 1, I am a helmet cam cyclist (my youtube channel is "Angry Ginger Cyclist", no I'm not always angry lol) and as you can probably tell from my screen name, I go fishing too. ^_^ So, that's me and I hope to have a great time here.

Welcome aboard cycling_angler, enjoy the forum. I'm also an angler, with a liking for carp fishing, and also small still water trout fishing.

Oh, that's awesome, I tend to go for the carp too but I also enjoy a bit of trotting or ledgering on the free stretch of the Itchen, some nice carp in the river too if you ever wanna come down and give it a bash.

Hello Mike, I'm from Southampton too. I am fortunate to be able to cycle through the Common every day! Have a great time riding!

Awesome and thank you, you'll know if you ever spot me in town, I carry a large-ish green and black bag on my back with the top of a track pump sticking out, I normally have a purple hoodie, red helmet, my camera is one of the new sony action cams and you might hear me blasting the airzound at a dopey driver, ride safe. :bicycle:

Hello there!

New to this forum so I thought I would into myself..

I live in the Bristol area, I like riding my bike for the sake of exploring new areas and I like riding my bike for training or racing. I'm more of a roadie these days, I recently sold my mountain bike  needs must unfortunately. I've been a member of a tri club for a couple of years but I fancy joining a road club at the moment (any recommendations?)

I'm a composite engineer, and I do have a little bike project that may take off in the next few months, but we will see....
