Here for rides.
I used to do a fair bit of jogging but i never enjoyed it , always felt like i was runnign through the tarmac rather than over it , 18 min 5 ks and 40 min 10 k were about my limit.
18 min 5k 40 min 10k ain't a "fair bit of jogging" but rather serious club running pace.

I've seen a massive uptake in jogging this last year specially by woman, I live on a mainish road and everyday they jog past my house, over the last few months I've seen 3 women get better and better, faster and faster...one is a largest woman who started off walking and now jogging, if anything its what motivates me to keep exercising and keep fit....
I joined the beginners course in a running club last September, 15 ladies and 5 blokes started. There's now me and another guy, and six of the ladies left.

Some of them haven't exercised for a long time, and as IOTCB says you can see them getting better and better, and they're obviously proud of what they've achieved, they can all now complete a parkrun without stopping.

There's a girl who joined the club a few years ago who's now lost eight stone, and currently training for her first ironman this year.

Anyone who starts to execise, be it cycling, running, or the gym, should be encouraged, everyone of us was a first timer at some point.

I should think a lot of people buy expensive keep fit equipment including bikes, gym membership and other equipment use them for a few weeks and then stop for whatever reason at this time of the year , some re start summer time some never do again

I really can't see why you would think that.

It's probably the response he gets while out in skintight lycra. Not sure what he wears on a bike though.

Isn't this much the same when Tennis courts are fully booked around Wimbledon and CC club runs are twice as busy around the TdF? If people want to take up some kind of sport as a new year's resolution, good for them. Got to be better than sitting on their arses watching crap TV.

They say it doesn't matter if you do 6 minute miles or 16 minute miles, as long as you do the miles.

10 miles @ 6 minute miles is decent running and out of reach for most people.

10 miles @ 16 minute miles is a fast walking pace and is probably within reach of a lot of people,

I know which is easiest I don't think they are comparable whatever " They" say.

My next run will be done in a forecast temp of -9. eek!
It's very difficult to get the clothing balance right at this kind of temperature. I don't have a perfect solution, but I have some good tips. High tech polyester underwear top and bottom, with long arms. Use tops with zips and shuttable vents. It's all about moisture transportation, whilst trying to maintain some insulation. And don't hang about in the cold after your run.

Sound advice, thank you. I find Stockholm's wind chill particularly hard to deal with on longer runs. Layering is the answer, of course using technical fabrics and, as you say, zips. Arm warmers help a bit and once the mercury goes below zero out come the tights. As does the buff worn as hat and gloves.

I don't run for more than half an hour or so in -6C or below. A bit wimpish perhaps but I'm worried about my left knee, and it feels worse in the cold. I saw a chap running with knee warmers yesterday

My aim in April is 13.1 miles at 8 minutes per mile. I'm close at 10.24 miles at 8:06 per mile.
But at the end of the day I applaud anyone that has got their arse of the sofa and is trying. This time last year I couldn't manage 1 continuous mile of running.

Oh and yes most of my running is still in shorts and vest, and they are dripping with sweat by the end of a run.

Leicester was full of runners on Christmas Day (maybe slight exaggeration). Brummies didn't appear to be starting their running again until Boxing Day.

My local one regularly has 300+ attendance, and has had nearly 500 in better weather.. Fast flat course too - 2 laps and a bit of the park lake, think the record is under 17 minutes. First time I went I was lapped just before the finish line

Like many here I couldn't run a mile this time last year. I was running 5k by summer, and did a 10k in September.

This year's goals include an 18k (shortest distance in the Ecotrail Oslo event) in May, and a mountain half-marathon under the Telemarks Toughest event in September. God willing.

Oh yes.. and a sprint triathlon (which I've mentioned on CC earlier, and before I found out that I couldn't run or swim the required distances!).
