I'm having a bit of an issue with my quad.. My return from today's ride was quite painful actually. It doesn't feel too bad at the moment, but it might be a case of my skipping the hill if its too steep (I.don't think it will be a problem if its just long.. but I'm not sure!), but I can do that myself and re-join you at some point?
Depends how it feels tomorrow. I think I will be able to say after 7-8 miles?
The steepest part of the hill is probabley 200-250yards.

It's only little. Takes about 5 minutes to climb. Let's see how we all feel tomorrow. We can avoid it easily.

How long does it take to walk up in cleats?

OK, OK, we'll skip the hill if we need to.
Or we can go up it from Charlton (which is much longer and steeper!!)

Thanks everyone for a great mucky ride really enjoyed it.

What a fun day! I only signed up to the ride the night before, booked a rail ticket and retrieved my road bike from its winter storage. Its first trip out since November! ^_^

Although I was in time for the train, sadly the Guard was not. Meanwhile the Customer Services chap was incredibly helpful and radioed ahead to Stevenage to ensure I could retrieve my bike from the Guards van. The thought of the bike going to Leeds was a bit of a worry! 25 minutes later I was in Stevenage and joined a gang of 16 cyclists who had kindly waited for me. Thank you The Doctor for that.

We left the station, followed a cycle path out into the countryside. The first couple of roads had fast moving vehicles but soon we were onto lanes, winding our way through villages, up a hill that was definitely a hill, no view from the top of anything other than fog and down the other side again. As well as familiar faces I met some new peeps and some that I only know from their web presence. And of course someone who I knew but didnt recognise! D'Oh! Sorry Jayonabike!

Some were local, some had cycled across from other parts of the county and some had travelled from further afield. Most were on road bikes and the less I say about the mud, the better! At least there were no Fords! (And it wasnt the muddiest ride I have ever been on!) There were also the most courteous and patient of drivers I have ever seen who were just happy to pull into a layby and wait as we weaved our way past them, smiling and waving. Excellent.

At 15 miles we reached a garden centre which served great cake and refreshments. Chit chat and general banter took over, more tea was consumed then it was out into the foggy countryside. We made our way back to Stevenage and went our separate ways. 28 miles for the day in good company in a part of the world I have never been to before.

I took some pics (I did say I was going to put them here and didnt receive any resistance I dont think) and have added one extra that I mentioned to Jayonabike - my first cycling tour to John O'Groats from London. Still grinning as I think about it!

I shall keep my eye out for other The Doctor rides and hope that next time it will be less foggy and I will be able to see Red in his field (which apparently I was quite close to)!

Thank you everyone, that was fun!

Mice :hello:

A good day on the bike. I cycled up to Stevenage from Hemel with a couple of mates, and with the ride and an extended route home I clocked up 65 miles. I could of carried on but the thought of a roast dinner waiting for me at home got the better of me. It was good to meet new people, and a few familiar faces from previous rides. The mist started to lift after the cafe stop, and it was very mild for the time of year. It didn't feel like a bike ride in January, definitely a good day on the bike.
P.S nice pictures Mice!
