Hey guys,

Just about to purchase my first bike since I was about 15!

I'm planning on doing a 30m ride in Oct as part of a charity thing so need a reasonable bike for the road but I don't want to limit myself to the road...

Are hybrid bikes really a good idea?

I was looking at carerra fury but now I'm wondering should i go hybrid?

Cheers

Welcome to the website.
A hybrid is a good start for a bike, as it kind of gives you the best of both worlds (road/mtb bike)
Go in a few shops and try out a few bikes and see how they feel before you Buy.

Thanks, I'm going to pop to halfords this eve so ill hopefully make a decision with their advice (is it good advice there?)

My worry is hybrid bikes seem to have slick road tyres.. Are these ok for dirt tracks etc too?

Depending what kind of dirt tracks you're riding on, perhaps have a look at Cyclocross bikes.

And welcome!!! Whereabouts in Kent are you?

Well, just I don't want to not be able to ride down short cuts or through fields etc.. Mainly just using it to get fit but if I'm doing a 30m ride along roads I think I need something that can handle that?

I'm in Ashford  you close?

No I'm in Welling although I'll be in Ashford fairly often as my brother lives in Bethesden. I lived just off Beaver Road years ago though.

A cyclocross should be able to handle most things like that.

Hi, I;m a Rye based cyclist, I agree with Martin, cyclocross is a good choice of bike, kent and sussex roads are poorly maintained and a x bike will deal with them better and give you better scope for your cycling to progress.

Cool, If you know any decent places to ride in the area, I'd like to know

This one sounds pretty good and isn't too expensive, any opinions? > CARRERA CROSSFIRE 2 HYBRID BIKE

:welcome: enjoy the ride and the great rides in Kent. Roads themselves aren't brilliant i agree but the rides are and round your way they are littered with great pubs for a midway stop.
Enjoy the site too. There 's lots of good advice and plenty of humour.
