I had no intention of buying another project while I was still working on the Carrera, but I made the silly mistake of randomly scrolling through Marketplace the night before Christmas eve, which led me to heading to delightfully scenic Peckham at 9pm, which is always the best time to visit that area!
Anyway, I grabbed this, a 2016 Boardman FS Team frame, with Rock Shox Monarch shock plus a SRAM rear derailleur and FSA crank, that were both unfortunately beyond saving, for £50.
The reason the guy was selling it so cheap is because he believed the shock was seized, He'd bought it a couple of years ago also as a project that he thought would be an easy build and said he realised pretty quickly that it was going to be out of his range of experience as he couldn't get the shock out of the frame and couldn't work out how to get the crank off, so he stuck it in his garage and forgot about it until he had a clearout. This pic was taken just after I got it home, the shock came off after a bit of motorcycle owner "gentle persuasion" and I already knew about that crank having built in extraction so that was off in no time. When I got the shock off I realised that it was actually the pivot bearings that were all seized and the shock was absolutely fine!
So, since that time I've been figuring out what I want to do with this thing, it obviously needs everything so it's going to be a longterm project as I'm on disability and my budget is limited, but since repainting the Carrera I've developed the painting bug again and want to do something with this frame as well. So I've dismantled the frame sections with an aim to painting the main frame, but mirror polishing the rear assembly. I've already made a start on polishing, stripping the paint off was what can only be described as tortuous and I had the joy of discovering that Boardman used some sort of epoxy filler to give a smooth finish over some of the welds, which was a nightmare to remove!
Not the best pic, my only functioning camera right now is a 20 year old Canon 400D that only works when tethered to my computer, but here's where I'm at with polishing so far.
It's not perfect yet as I'm limited to hand sanding & polishing until I can buy a rotary kit for my drill. I've left the old bearings in for now, no point getting new bearings gunked up with old paint and polishing compound!
I'm currently stripping the last of the paint from the main frame, fortunately as I'm painting that I don't have to deal with the filler, as long as I sand it all nice and smooth it'll be ready for primer as early as next week. I've also been working out some ideas for how I'm going to paint it, I'm not going to keep this lowkey like the Carrera as I won't ever be locking this up outside anywhere, so I can try out some more interesting ideas.
