Hi,

I have just got a new bike. My old bike gears were 48-36-26T, and my new bike has 50/34 x 13/29. Will hills be harder? If so, how much harder??

Well without details of the rear cassettes involved this is an impossible to answer question. I'd expect that the old bike had a cassette ranging from 11-32 or even 34, I very much doubt your 50-34 has such a wide range rear cassette! This will make things doubly harder.

Assuming the rear cassettes are the same, which I doubt, then this may help

1. How often were you using the 26 tooth ring and the largest rear cassette. If your answer is hardly at all you may be OK.
2. What sort of roads do you ride? If very hilly ones then yes it will be a lot harder, almost certainly.

A 26 x 23 is almost the same as 34 x 29, so as they say above, depends on what your old cassette is. But there are other factors. Presume your new bike is lighter and thinner tyres? This will make climbing easier and crank lengths will make a difference.
Happy climbing
