If you unscrew the plastic cover at the other side you can pull it back, without having to remove the pedal & take a better look inside.
I'm no expert by any means on these things but I think there's nothing much more in there other than a couple pulleys a belt & the actual brains of it.
You should be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from!
