At the end of the day, people see what they want to see. I LOVE north Wales, me. It always feels like I'm on me holidays whenever I go and whatever I'm doing. I even love the language and the lyricism of it even though I understand nary a word. Cymru am beith!

I think that whenever you feel your life is at it's grimest, and you can see no hope in your existence, then simply go to Ffestiniogg in February. After that, nothing looks as grim as it once did:sad:

You've never spent 3 hours waiting for a ferry in Stranraer then?

We used to go to North Wales every few weeks as students to climb. We usually stayed near Bethesda where we'd go drinkng and spending our money in the Black Bull. The people in there were extremely hostile, they would pick fights and try to provoke us, really nasty they were. On one occasion a pal of mine went to the bar to buy a round, the barmaid told her it was "nineteen shillings and ninepence". My pal replied "Gosh, is that more or less then a pound? I can't remember!" This was exactly what the barmaid was waiting for and she launched into a tirade of "I can tell you're English... you've no EDUCATION!"

Lovely scenery though and Tryfan is my favourite little mountain.

have to admit N Wales is grim in the sense that I've only really been through it. And the people seem to want to keep it that way. Ever tried getting somewhere to eat in Holyhead when a ferry's been delayed or cancelled.. or even a B&B ? I reckon there's been a radioactive leak from the reactor.
I've been the subject of that weirdly wonderful sense of Welsh business acumen in the Gower. 8 or 9 of us having a weekend away, ate in this pub, drank there all evening and when closing time came.. the locals all came in and we were shoved out.. now I've nothing against that particularly, but we wanted to buy 60-70 pounds worth of beer to bring back to the campsite.. and the landlord refused to serve us... I don't quite get that. We weren't rowdy and he missed out on selling us lots of overpriced beer.
Finally virtually all countryside is grim during the winter... however yesterday was a balmy 15 degrees, with a spectacular sunset here and I happened to be around Benbulben in Co Sligo and driving back home was fantastic. glowing red sunset and not a breath of air.. the lakes and mountains which on Saturday featured snow flurries/sleet/hail/driving rain and gales looked like they'd finally come alive for spring. The difference a few days make.

On a sunny day, the view across the River Clwyd valley from the A55 as it swings past Rhuallt is one of the most wonderful scenes in the world. That view alone more than makes up for Holyhead.

I'll try not to take offence at this thread.
Agree about Holyhead though, but hey ho it's practically full of English people

Have to slightly agree with you there tho:blush:

Were not all bad-and certain places are gorgeous...Betws-y-coed and Dolgellau when the sun is shining are pretty hard to beat.

The Welsh are woth knowing, you just have to take the effort to understand them and get past their outer skin.

Used to drink in a pub when away, run by Emlyn. At closing time he was pretty militant about chucking out, telling people quite roughly to get out now. One day there was a Norwegian group in, who told him they weren't used to such politeness.

"Right then" he said grabbing the blokes pint, "F$ck off out then, I've had enough of you". He was greeted with a loud cheer from them and they all trooped out. I believe I saw him smile as he turned away.
