Cool, but lovely day today, so headed out for a couple of hours. Went over to Holme Moss which is a nice big steepish hill on the West Yorkshire / Derbyshire border.

Cruising along at a nice pace on the approach road and something was very strange. The road was perfectly smooth. Not a pothole in sight. Seemed to last all the way. Not everything was newly tamacced, but all the roads were in great condition.

I'm guessing this is all in preparation for the Tour de France this summer. Wish all roads were like this! Felt so much smoother and faster than normal riding and hole dodging!

Yes looking forward to that here, the main road just up the road from me is part of the TDF so is getting torn up and redone as we speak.

They have been at work round here too, but only on the bits of road that the Tour peloton will be using. In order to get to or from the nice stuff, we have to suffer the usual crappy road surfaces!

We rode the part where they come off the Woodhead pass and head towards Bradfield on Sunday. The first section with the climb then 25% descent is a bit bumpy (not sure if they're resurfacing that before the tour or not), but once you turn off the strines road to Bradfield the road is like a table top for miles, all the way to the one way system at Hillsborough. It's just a pleasure to ride on and you can keep up a fast pace very easily.

Shame the rest of the roads around there are horrible boneshakers!

Its a good job the Tour de France is not going through Manchester, they would need full suspension bikes ;)
