It doesn't matter how you dress it up Road Tax was abolished in 1937, where it no longer became a ring fenced taxation that was used solely to build and repair roads.

I thought it was the road fund license. The DVLA website refers to it by several different names so it's hardly surprising when people get it "wrong".

I always called it "road tax" before I became a self-righteous prick of a cyclist.

So you still go to your local Council and tell them your here to pay the Poll tax? The Poll tax was a Taxation that everyone over the age of 18 paid. You now pay Council tax, based on the councils valuation of your house in 1991. 2 Completely different things, Just like Road Tax(a taxation to use the Roads) and VED(a taxation based on the C02 Emissions a vehicles engine produces). It doesnt matter how you try to dress it up Road Tax no longer exists, Hence why many cars with Engines dont pay VED( Corsa 1.3, Peugeot 108 1.0, Fiat 500 twin air, Porsche 916, to name but 4).
I have a Hoover, oh wait a minute no i don't, I have a Dyson. If I was to phone up Hoover and ask them for a part for my Dyson they'd just laugh at me and put the phone down. @Profpointy Im laughing at you, does your phone do this...............

To be honest, I can't quite see how a tax chargeable on allowing certain vehicles to use the roads is not a "road tax".
Some vehicles, including bikes, pushchairs, old cars, ambulances and the like don't have to pay it

Whether or not said money gets spent on roads (hypothecation, which isn't what happens) or just on general stuff (which is what happens) is a completely different point

No they wouldn't. You no longer require proof of insurance(except if you live in NI). See this is where is all falls down, ignorance.

How it works
If you have a vehicle tax reminder (form V11 or V85/1 for HGV), bring it to your nearest vehicle licence-issuing Post Office branch along with:

• A valid MOT/GVT/PSVC if required – your vehicle tax reminder will tell you if you need this. Your MOT must be valid on the date from which the tax disc starts or the date the tax disc is issued whichever is the later.
• For disabled vehicle tax, you need to bring a valid Exemption Certificate
• Reduced pollution certificate if required

Please note: Customers in Northern Ireland are required to produce a valid paper copy of the certificate of insurance or a cover note. Your insurance must be valid on the date from which the tax disc starts or the date the tax disc is issued whichever is the later.

Jesus................. Thats the point. Certain forms of transport require to pay a fee, certain forms dont........ Cycles, among others dont. iIl-informed people spout the first thing that comes into their head and shout "get off the road, you dont pay road tax!!!" Yes maybe the answer is to give/allow cyclists to display a VED/ Road Tax/ Car Tax/Road fund Licence to display, which is f**ked because as of September this year no one will(and after September no one will get) a Tax Disc to display anyway.

It's quite a simple point to me. The term Road Tax incorrectly implies it is paid towards the road therefor as cyclists do not pay then we're unwelcome guests who contribute nothing.

I couldn't give a toss what it's called but if the name causes morons to think I don't belong on it then it needs to be corrected.

If the morons learnt what it's actually for then anyone can call it what they like. Until then, I dislike the term.

I find that 'Roads are paid for out of income tax and given I've got a proper job and you drive a van for a living why don't you get off my road' does the job.

Everyone I know calls it road tax
including myself. It's not part of a anti-cycling conspiracy but just what it is colloquially known as. You can try and get the entire public of the UK to change what they call it but if you think you
can do that on some cycling forums then I've got a bridge to sell you.
