Not Riding New Bike

I remember a few people (one in particular) steering me clear of such bikes (cyclo cross types) for road use, based around your experience.

Try something like a winter road bike (i.e enought clearance for mudguards and a slightly (an emplasis on the slightly) softer geometry?

Only need the bike for icy (road conditions as happy to otherwise use one of my other road bikes. I've not needed such a bike at all this winter although weather looks like it's turning very cold next week.

Looks like I can get the limited edition Subway Hybrid and Bluemel guards for £180 with £20 web discount and a 10% BC discount. £30 for marathon winters and I should be sorted for about £210!

Tyoe of bike will make little difference on ice (albeit I would prefer to be on a slightly more upright one).

Get the Subway with the discs, not the ltd edition-I have had both, the vee brakes are faffy. Discs well worth the £60 odd more.

I'd siggest asking Helfrauds fit them, then if they mess up they can put it right. Oh, and another thing, put a piece of rubber between the bracket and the bridge on the rear guard (the bridge being the bit where you would normally fit caliper brakes) to stop rattling.

Edit: Oh and the stock tyres weigh a farkin tonne. I sold them on here (brand new) and put a set of schwalbe city cruisers on. Great tyre with relatively low rolling resistance and reasonable puncture protection.

Oh and another thing, the headset didn't last 5 minutes on mine. I got a replacement off fleabay but it's not a great fit. Might be worth asking Helfrauds if they can source you a spare whilst you are there.

Rode my subway today , maybe 3-4 minutes slower over 10 miles compared to the normal commuter but i reckon i could cut a bit off that as @400bhp says they stock tyres dont help although i will not use it enough to justify changing mine .Beavertail mudgaurds are ok but they rattle !

I'll be significantly slower than that as I'll be putting studded ice tyres on, although will only use it in sub zero temps.

I was going to mention a MTB. Far better option. Every stable should have one. Mine is currently set up for Icy commutes, but I've not needed it this winter. Last 3 winters I have ! Once the threat of ice goes, off come the full guards, on go trail tyres and it's ready for messing about off road !

Bought a Planet X Stealth on eBay about 2 months ago. Had a quick ride on the road outside our
house under cover of darkness, and veered from one side of road to the other nearly colliding with a stationary car.

Guess I'll be doing my first time trial in March on the road bike!

*flame suit* is this the problem when you have the ability to choose which bike to ride at any given day?

I have a few bikes, 2 in a rebuild state, so ride my cube due to its ready to ride and very good at what I put it through. But this could change once the other 2 are ready to roll, and I think that one of them will be a garage queen.

Bought my first road bike five years ago, and took it straight out for a spin. Five miles down the road, wobbled too much, hit the kerb, over the bars, one broken collar bone! Ambulance guys would only take me, and not the brand new bike, so we had to wait roadside until my wife could come and pick it up before being shipped rather painfully off to casualty.
Never rode it again, and flogged it to a mate, losing about £50 on the deal (only had a scuff on one of the brake levers). He still rides 'my bike', and I now enjoy a nice hybrid.
