One of my journeys involves a short but narrow section of uphill (probably about 60 yards before the road levels and widens to regular width). I've started hopping up on the pavement for this stretch because the artic' lorries can't be arsed sitting behind me for 10 seconds. I've had them pass me at this kind of distance, but not at this speed.

Would you not be better off taking a strong primary position or are they still going to pass?

It's unnecessarily magnanimous of the cyclist to say that he wouldn't like to see the driver lose his job. I'd like to see him permanently disqualified from driving.

I'd like to see him thrown into a pit along with a dozen hungry pit-bull terriers. See how he likes being faced with an agonising death which he is helpless to prevent. After all, it was only good luck that prevented a similar fate happening to the cyclist. The driver is an utter c*ck, who should never be allowed to drive ANYTHING again, ever.

Hands up if you've had a pass like that?

[Raises hand]

On topic, I don't think dismissal is enough. That driver clearly knew the cyclist was there (horn) and was sounding it a good few seconds before the close pass (despite room to pass). His intention being what? The police should be made to deal with this and answer why not if they don't. The driver should never be in a position to do that again. A sweet irony would be for him to lose his license and have to cycle, and then be subjected to that sort of pass - then he might understand.

That is hands-down the worst close pass I've ever seen.

If overtakes like that were as commonplace as some on here suggest, I'd simply give up cycling.

Gross misconduct can be removed immediately. Depends on the drivers contract, if indeed he was actually on one?

It's not that simple I don't think, the driver could say it wasn't him sounding the horn, there was an unseen hazard on the other side of the road, a mechanical failure, all the common excuses. I hop I'm wrong but..

What sort of employment contract is a man who tows caravans on? Agency staff? So, he's not "sacked"- they just won't use him again. The company seem anxious that their unverifiable claim of sacking the driver is the end of the matter.

That kind of pass makes my videos look pathetic. (Although some would say they are pathetic anyway).

In other news, I was threatened today by someone who I have never met before about videoing him. He was talking about my camera and specifically my car. The police have been notified.

Agree that the company seem keen to draw a line under it - and who can blame them - but kudos for them taking action against the driver, even if it was just a contractor. Often we just get something like "the driver was reminded of their obligations towards other road users"

Possibly, uclown, it would certainly stop them passing (unless they chose to go over me) but I expect such a move would only result in them blaring their horns.

in the situation you describe... I would also opt for the pavement providing it's suitable (i.e. not in use by pedestrians, and if so, wide enough to share.) Yes a strong primary is also an option, but bearing in mind the stopping/slowing distance of a lorry as opposed to a Fiat Punto, sometimes to wise thing to do is get out of the way instead of getting in the way. Self preservation is paramount.

Well that was my thinking after one too many big lorries had squeezed by my elbow

Just my tuppence worth, but I seem to get on fairly well with motorists. I'm forever being waved out of side streets and such.

The scariest thing about cycling on the roads, in my opinion, is the fact that no matter how aware and vigilant you are of other motorists, the only real control you have relates to those in front and to your sides. There's bugger all you can do about the lorry driver coming up from behind, texting his wife.
