Number of drivers using phones while driving tripled within a year!!

I like the 'crushed'. I'm sure a mini version of a car crusher would easily fit into the boot of a Police car. Not going to happen though.

Had one this afternoon at this rba (I was in car at time). Him entering rba from north in left hand lane and turning right to go west, me going west to south. On phone and oblivious to eveyone else and quite an unpleasant surprise as I was between the north entrance/exits (here) at the time, him turning right from where yellow car is.

I've often thought that if there was the threat of having the phone seized on the spot it would do more to deter people from using them.

True, but handing them back a small cube rather than a handful of bits appeals to me more. Using it as a paperweight would be a reminder of their crime, or they could sell it on ebay to offset the cost of a new phone.
