Dan. From viewing your videos, you seem to ride solely in built up areas. Do yourself a favour. Head out into the Northumberland countryside and tackle the hills. Much more fun than dealing with traffic.

Na, that's just where things happen. Don't take my videos as a representation of where I predominantly ride. Just like don't take the videos as a representation as to how most drivers drive around cyclists. A few seconds out of a few hours ride.

I agree Dan, technically he is breaking the law and I understand why the law is worded as such but it just seems a little harsh reporting him for what I personally see as a minor infraction, I believe we should report serious stuff and not come across as a petty bunch reporting anything and everything, as some seem to do on here. The cyclists voice is becoming one that is listened to at last let's not become a petty whining voice, this is not aimed at anyone here.

Its not something I would report, which is why I said it was a grey area for me. Idea being that he is out of the way and not causing any trouble nor is he actively moving the vehicle while on the phone however he is still as you say technically breaking the law and hes a police officer. Again which is why I said its a grey area in my mind.
Im just going to leave it. The amount of bureaucracy is stupid.

You should have done what a recent poster did, bang on his windows and tell him he is on camera

Mostly along the coast and Into the seaton burn area and the airport as I like watching the planes land so we are talking Ponteland. However to get back to where I live being in Tynemouth if move too far west im coming back through Benton and town. In fairness too much in any direction im heading through highly ubranised areas. End of the day I have to go through an urbanised area one way or another. I do cycle in rush hour traffic at spots I know traffic will be backed up but that's to get my filtering fix. Also to feel incredibly smug.

I did think about going up to say. Has the £100 come into force yet? How does it work if your a policeman and your doing it... do you ticket yourself?(Thinking about it that's sounds incredibly sarky which is no surprise) Then that video came to mind and I didn't. Also im not a person to confront unless its really bad. I have only confronted two drivers in my cycling life and that's because both of them nearly knocked me off of which where reported and given section 59 warnings. I don't like talking to people in cars unless they talk to me. Wait I lied, 3 but that was to ask a young man what he shouted at me, turned out he was a daffodil as I first suspected.

I suggest reporting it. One of two things will happen:
  • It will be viewed in a black and white, letter of the law fashion; taken seriously and the driver reprimanded and issued with a fixed penalty notice
  • It will be viewed as anecdotal evidence of a driver stopped (short of a junction), not "driving" (operating the vehcile) and not causing any obvious safety concern - but his shift will get a cracking laugh at his expense and rib him about it for months.
Either way - result! ^_^

TBH I think the biggest problem you'll face in reporting this will be proving that he has committed an offence (the grey area you mentioned earlier).

The vehicle doesn't appear to move anywhere in the clip so if he said that he was parked with the handbrake engaged you're, unfortunately, unlikely to be able to refute it with just the video evidence.

Cool. Ponteland is the gateway to a thousand wonderful country roads, but it is a bit of a trek from the coast. I consider myself very lucky to live in North Newcastle.
