If you're in Ross and you like curry, try ZamZam on the old Gloucester road just off the town centre, or Yaks 'n' Yetis (a Ghurka restaurant) on Broad Street. Then walk to Wilton and get a beer in The White Lion.

Been asked today by folk heading to Glasgow for recommendations and thought I'd copy the e-mail I sent them. I'll be in Liverpool, Manchester and nottingham in the coming months so it will be good to know the places there to get some decent grub

So I'll start.

Glasgow

Indian - The Dhabba, Balbirs or Mother India (forget these places if you like a korma or chicken tikka masala though)

Chinese - Ho Wong, Amber Regent or Asia Style

Italian - All average apart from Sartis and if you're splashing out La Parmigiana

Seafood - Crabshakk, City Merchant, Rogano, Gamba, Gandolfi Fish

Scottish - City Merchant, The Sisters, Two Fat ladies, Cafe Gandolfi, Urban Brasserie

Spanish - Cafe Andaluz

That should keep you busy if coming to Glasgow

You forgot the Valdoro.

I got bladdered in a pub on 2 levels, down a hill near the river in Ross a couple of years ago. They had a live music, dancing thing in the bar area. Very jolly night.

Indian, Cheddar Cottage

Chinese, Riverside (it's the only one)

Kebabs, theres only one

Thai, theres only one

Posh English, theres only one

Pub grub, The White Hart (there are 2 of these)

Fish and Chips, Tuckers

Cheese, the Cheddar Cheese Company, they do free tasters:tongue:

Greedo, you need to cast your net wider, we have some great options here in Cheddar.

Blimey - that's an impressive list for a town like Cheddar

For Chichester, the choice of eateries in the town is crap- loads of the usual Italian chain suspects - Pizza Express/ASK/Zizi/Prezzo.

A few not very good Chineses - mainly take aways

Two good Indians.

My mates all like India Gate(although I think it's really just a bog standard Indian with friendlier waiters')

I prefer Masala Gate (about 2 doors down on St Pancras in Chicester from India Gate), which I believe Marco Pierre White has some stake in. Love him or loathe him, Masala Gate is different. The menu has food you won't find in any other Indian.

Also a new Thai called Thai House opened a few months ago and the one time I had there was nice.

Chichester being surrounded by beautiful country pubs has more nice places to eat in the environs than the city eg The Crab and Lobster _ expensive, but by the sea and serves suberb local seafood

The Earl of March in Lavant - based on the Goodwood estate. Local produce and pretty reasonable prices.

Elsewhere almost every rural pub offers "gastro-dining" ie vaguelly local food and a restaurant rather than a pub atmosphere, which I don't like.

When MTBing, "The Fox Goes Free" in Charlton is a great stop off point. Fantastic atmosphere /still basically a pub that serves nice food than vica-versa / huge garden / cycle friendly and a great name for a pub!

Generally though, I think the imagination of restauranters is very poor.

I know opening a restaurant is tough, but why not try not try something different. In Chichester (an affluent and reasonably sized city) there is no Mexican / decent Spanish / Middle Eastern restaurants. I'm sure people would love a change from the usual crap pizza / pasta combo or curry which dominates the scene in the city. Anything else = a taxi ride

Is the White Horse in Chilgrove any good? We used to go there all the time when Barry owned it but he sold in 2005 and we haven't tried it since.

Sounds like the Hope and Anchor. A fine pub, especially in summer.

+1 The Fox Goes Free.

Horsham, imo/ime:-

Indian: The Raj Kumar or New Curry Centre it's too close to call
Chinese: The China Brasserie
GastroPub: The Black Jug (more or less my local and it has a 'bike rack' outside
Thai: River Kwai

The recently opened branch of Cote is pretty good but I still miss "Les Deux Garcons"

Lilly's Victorian Tea Room. For a good breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea this is a great place to eat and drink! I've been there many times and enjoyed wonderful food. St. Helens, Merseyside.

Cheap bistro - The Lavender, Lavender Hill, Battersea
Indian - The Indian Room, Bedford Hill, Balham - the jalfrezi is wonderful
I've never been to a good Italian, Japanese or Chinese restaurant in London
English - St. John, Smithfield (not in South London, but good enough for a transfer)
Best view - Oxo Brasserie - but the food isn't good value
2nd best view - 2nd floor Brasserie, Peter Jones, Sloane Square. The food is delicious
Cheap Lebanese - Al Dar, Kings Road - the chicken livers are fab

Manchester:

Korean - Koreana
Thai - Chaophayra
Italian - Croma (pizzas good and good value!)
Cocktails (but no food...) The Gin Club (bit out of town), or One Lounge (also a bit out the way)
'British' - Rhubarb (bit out of town again)
Greek - Kosmos (again, not city centre stuff...) Dimitri's also worth a peek (that's in town)

Enoteca Turi on Putney High Street is extremely good - very friendly and cosy place, seasonal regional Italian cooking, strong emphasis on matching food and wine (they do regular Italian regional food- and wine-tastings), bike parking nearby....
