Birmingham's best known for the Balti, but i'll always remember the imaginatively titled Mr Egg cafe, where you can eat what you like, as long as it has an egg with it.

A review of this fine establishment:

"Behold the king of all greasy spoons. Mr Egg is Birmingham's finest institution, where the motto was once "Eat like a king for a £1" now since adjusted for inflation and vandalised to read "Eat like a Ring for £1.50". The other new motto is "Eat like a queen for £3", being situated next to the Gay Quarter. It’s the place to go for “a cracking meal”. But if you need the toilet go in pairs. One to use it, the other to make sure no one else goes in, as there is no lock or toilet paper, so take your own! Open well into the early hours, it's packed after 11pm, serving the usual chips, fry-ups, jacket potatoes and baguettes.
The decor has an egg theme, the ceiling features a lovely fried egg in fabric and there is a cheerful use of bright yellow tiles throughout. If you haven't been to Mr Egg, then you obviously don't go out enough. Chips here are good, (the secret ingredient is Tesco economy Chips), but beware of homeless people begging for cash to buy some toast. The chain-smoking emaciated staff here are obviously never hungry (not a good sign when you work with food), appearance wise they get 4 barks out of 5. As much as we take the piss out of these greasy dirt holes, the owners of these joints have the last laugh, as us fools keep going back for more!

Need a napkin, use your sleeve! During the day it's populated by smart office workers and builders in hard hats. At night piss heads and clubbers are the main inhabitants. It's just fantastic, lots of positive press coverage, because it has been voted the best greasy spoon in Brum and we couldn't agree more!

Mr Egg got shut down by Environmental Health. Not sure if it opened again.

The ex-owners of Mr Egg (presumably before it closed) also used to be big on the BDSM scene in Birmingham. Upstairs at Mr Egg apparently used to be a right old den of iniquity (sp?) with whips, chains, and other forms of bodily violation being commonplace, so I'm told.

Presumably less Egg and more Egg-beater.

A friend of my wife went there on his Stag doo. They got him dressed up in full DJ, didn't tell him where they were going, and then took him to Mr Egg.

Irony on the cheap (cheep?).

(Sorry!!)

I think I went in there some time ago.

My favourite was SNAX in Digbeth, but that's closed too, although I think they have other cafe's around the city. Can't beat a good greasy spoon , sausage, eggs, chips, beans, bread and butter and a mug of tea. mmmm.

Good tip MrP.

I spent most of the 90's and 00's on the road - I think there was a definite decline in good cafe's, probably the proliferation of McD's on every major junction.

Currently, my favourite sandwich shop is Greedy Guts in Knowle. Highly reccomend the cajun chicken.

If it's a chippy you're after then it has to be Bedders on the Cov' Rd at Small Heath.

It's a good job I'm desk bound now, don't get to visit these places anymore *sigh*
