I was cycling home tonight and I go through a council estate with some walkway/pathways - I'm not sure what it is becuase it's like a mini road with a pavement along side it?

Anyway, I'm cycling along the mini road comigng up to a corner I have done so many times - it's a bit of a blind bend but I didn't think it was that blind.

I must have been going too fast because I suddenly met another cyclist coming the other way - who was really bombing it and we both sort of looked at each other breaked and tried to swerve out of each other's way but there was no hope!

I went into the side of him head on - then I went over the handlebars and landed on my back - god it hurt! I've got a massive cog shaped scratch in my leg and the other knee is really bruised - it came up in a massive lump!

More importantly my bike is wrecked - the handlebars are totally bent - the front wheel is bucked - I haven't looked at it too well but it was unrideable and there is something making the wheels stick.

I can't beleive it - I've only had it a few weeks - back to the moutain bike for me!

We both agreed it was 50/50 and will definately learn from it - I feel sure that if he had stayed on course I would not have ridden into him but it was just so hard to brake and steer and everything - I expect I was doing about 9/10 mph maybe a little less - doesn't seem that fast does it until you have to stop dead!

There's a shed load of skin off my back on my t-shirt! Revolting - waiting for hubby to come home and give me first aid! I tried to go into my local gp on the way home to get them to look at the lump on my knee but they weren't interested and told me I had to go to A&E! I don't think I need that but was a bit unhelpful from a totally empty Doctor's surgery that was still open for another hour AND does emergency appointments!

Think I came off a lot better than my poor bike - will be taking all bends at 2 mph from now on!

Ouch, ouch, ouch! xx(

Sorry to hear about that! I suppose it will go down as one of life's painful lessons for both you and the other rider. Hopefully, you will heal quickly. Any chance of claiming for the bike damage on insurance?

ah unlucky hun...hope you heal quickly...it certainly shakes you up when you taste the tarmac. Happens to everyone at some point though.

Oh, bad luck! On the bright side, the bad luck can't run forever...

Perhaps some good luck might be if it's only wheels and handlebars - repaceable items - and of course that you weren't more seriously hurt and that you heal up quick!

Ouch. Gutted for you and the bike. Magnatom might be right, you might have a chance with insurance if your policy covers it. There might be a small limit though, or a handling fee.

Real bad luck RC...hope you heal soon. Its nice to hear (from the sound of it) that the other cyclist was ok and didn't go off one one...as happened to my wife in similar circumstances. Mind, he picked on the wrong one if he wanted her to roll over and take it...he got a right mouthful from her in return

Really? Omg i'm counting down the days now dammit.

Its not a garantee. Dont worry about it, just ride safe and you'll be fine.

I ring my bell when coming up to a blind junction, it has saved me from collisions with other cyclists a couple of times.

Thanks for all the replies guys!!!

Good news (!) Hubby managed to realign everything on the bike. Most of the trouble was that I hit the other bike with the side of my handlebars and it shifted everything over to the left quite a lot. Hubby straightened the bars and moved everything back to the right and managed to straighten the front wheel a bit too so the bike has lived to see another ride!

He checked the (carbon) forks for damage but thinks they are okay too!

As for me - in a lot of pain today so much bruising and not much skin left on my back... however did manage to ride in today (albeit slowly and v.carefully)!

I could try using my bell next time - I do do that on the canal and it works fine - I really can't work out why we found it so hard to avoid one another - just too fast I expect!

Anyway, won't be doing that again in a hurry!!!

I'm no expert, and I'm sure someone will correct me, but I think this is why you collided. I remember being told by my driving instructor you go where you are looking. So now instead of looking at the "obstacle" in my path, I look at the middle of the gap to one side of it. Hope that makes sense. Glad you and the bike are OK.

Here for rides.
Old mountain bike lore "Look at the tree hit the tree, look at the gap hit the gap"

It is the well documented problem of target fixation.
