OK, so who's gonna cycle to work tomorrow?

I made it in this morning 15 miles from Croydon on my new bike, wonderful!

All the way in I was wishing I was on my old 1.95" IRC Blizzards, these 1.5" Schwalbe Marathon Winters are pants in the snow.

Speaking of which, M&S have gents thermal underwear 25% off at the moment.

0c at 5:30 here in Cambridge, walked to main road from house, but other than that roads were nice and clear. Just a couple of numpty car drivers who insisted on passing with near side wheels throwing up slush, and then breaking as they hit the queue of traffic in front.

Couldn't take usual route as the cycle lane beside the guided busway was well under snow still.

I've been wary to test the freezing conditions (and the wrath of SWMBO) so January turned into a mostly "commute-free" zone. However, I've been fed up seeing other cyclists braving the sub-zero (or near-zero) temperatures and decided enough was enough, and opted to go for it (otherwise knows as "MTFU") this morning...

Kept to the main road for the first section (rather than venturing onto the cycle path) which was fine. The next back road section (Clackmannan to the new Clacks Bridge) was pretty icy under tyre in places, so I just took things a bit easier than I would and managed to remain upright. Wheel-spinning is, er, a new experience as is ice on the brake levers/shifters and frost on my tights and gloves, but I thoroughly enjoyed it this morning :cold:

My wife thinks I'm a nutter though 'cos she had trouble walking to the school on the sloppy pavements

and I'm glad I did! Beautiful for cycling this morning - 5°c, no wind, tiniest bit of fog, but not enough to be a problem and most of the snow has melted.
Also, the back of the traffic jam was out of sight over the bridge when I turned onto the road, and the front of it was out of sight through the lights and round the corner when I turned off the main road. That's at least two miles of traffic I filtered past. Feeling very smug now!!

-19.4 this morning, but little snow/ice. The salters round here have been doing a grand job.

Thats the ticket we boys in britain moan about a few inches of snow and just above zero tempratures and you guys over in scandinavia just take it in your stride -19.5 :cold:brrrrr I cant think how cold that is and imagine the wind chill riding into that temprature mucho respecto Herzog:thumbsup:

Marathon Winters are no good for snow of a depth greater than 2mm, unless it's been compacted and frozen.
It's the reason I decided to Ice Spikers on a MTB, just in case of snow.

10 mile commute this morning on the MTB with Schwalbe Snow Studs.

The road outside my house is a bus route so was clear. I pumped the tyres back up to 60psi and left for work. Straight away it was easy (for studded tyres) and I felt confident. Normally, I would join the cycletrack as soon as it starts, to avoid the busy 40mph road. But after one look at the snow covered track, I decided to take the road. The cycletrack was untreated, and had all kinds of impressions from prams, pedestrians and sledges all over it.

Riding along the 40mph limit road, I was pleasantly surprised. There was not enough clear road for me to hold anything but a strong primary and I had all the drivers waiting patiently behind until there was room to pass safely. They all received a wave of thanks from me .

This carried on for about 2miles, until I got close to Stevenage Town Centre. I wasnt going to take the main RAB's on my heavy studded MTB, so took the cycletrack past the train station. This is where it became difficult. Straight away the font wheel was slipping and sliding, even at slow speeds. So I stopped, and dropped the pressure down to about 30-40 in both tyres. Although this did have a positive impact, it was *very* difficult to stay upright in the half frozen slush which was untreated. The front wheel was sliding from one rut to another, but I managed to stay on the bike.

I left the cycletrack as soon as I could and rejoined the clear road. The last 6miles was perfectly fine. So good I wished I had chosen my road bike and taken the main roads the whole way

9.81Miles, 11.4mph Average, 51minutes.

I'm done with the snow now. As far as I'm concerned it can all melt in the next day or two and the temperature can stay above 0 for the rest of the year

Yep, cold but fun - especially the descent into Bern.
