...let me help you out with that...Muggins here took a look at the wiggle prices and didnt notice the comment that they are sold as pairs origionally...so I assumed the £90 ish tag was per bag!...;)

If cash is a problem, I'd agree with TB, just go for some decent liners - in fact a strong dustbin bag should be fine.

Having said that I quite like Ortleibs - mostly because I think they have the best fixing mechanism of any pannier. While the rolltop is not really necessary for panniers I don't think it is that much of a pain either.

You may struggle to find a real bargain on ebay though. I have been looking out for a pair for a while and the ones in decent condition go for about 75% of the shop price + postage.

Hrmm not so far off. Saw a couple of single rear end rolltops (can't remember name off hand) going on ebay recently and recommened my sister keep tabs, as she was after a single pannier. Think they both went for 40 odd quid. Some stuff 101 peeps have the auto-searches set for and just waiting to jump, happy to pay anything up to the retail price.

I have a dilema..it's called cash...
If you have panniers that are structurally sound, then all you need is a some liners to keep your stuff dry Don't worry about putting anything on the outside of the panniers; you're not trying to keep the pannier fabric dry!

Bin liners are too frail, rubble bags too thick, but you can get 250g clear bags of up to 2ft x 3ft that are perfect. There's lots of suppliers on the internet, and even the wholesalers will send you samples if you give them a bit of chat.

I'm sure Ortliebs are fine panniers, (although the flap tops don't have that extended tunnel entrance of the rollers).

But use what you've got. Tour NOW! You can pimp your ride when you're dead.

(25 year old karrimor panniers still keeping everything perfectly dry with the help of 5 quids worth of liners.)

I'm with Tim.

I would have given my right leg to get touring again when I got back, but have no holiday left at work.

You don't need a new bike, BT (N) FB. Just do some washing, repack and get back on the road. Freedom is an amazing thing - if you have it, use it!!!

You can borrow my Ortliebs by the way, if that would help. I need them for the August BH but they're yours till then. PM me if you want them.

On a similar note, as a squaddie a (good) few years ago, I used to pack all my kit in bin liners, never had a problem with wet kit. I even packed my bergan into my poncho and swam over a Welsh lake once, and it still stayed dry.

That is a very kind offer Cathryn thankyou. I probably wont need to take you up it though, i can make do with some rubble sacks until I can get some Ortliebs.

Many thanks indeed.:becool::smile::smile:

do others use the strap that clips to either end of the roll bit and then down to the front of the bag? I've never bothered.

They're good for when you've locked the bike up at the back of the hotel because then you can shoulder sling all four panniers and carry the top bag up to your room. Apart from that I don't use them.

Must admit I am tempted to take my audax bike instead of the tourer sometimes, but once all the gear is hung on it I realise the tourer is better.

After a few days on tour it's astonishing how fast an unladen tourer can go..

As for panniers, I like the old cotton duck things. It doesn't matter that they are black as I usually have high-vis bike clothes on and probably draped over them.

After several good soakings on the German tour recently I find myself finally swayed by the waterproof concept of these bags:biggrin:

So which ones are the best? I need front and rear and a bar bag. I need them to be at least as big as my carradice overlanders if not a bit bigger in terms of how much they can carry. I would rather have coloured bags as opposed to just black for safty reasons.

Anybody got a set they wish to sell?

This site reckons the Carradice are re-waterproofable. Could save some money for the Bianchi ....:biggrin:
