I had a mammoth loft clear out recently and came across an aged pair of braces, a "proper" mid calf length overcoat, a trilby and some "under the armpit" trousers that belonged to my old Dad.
Which set me pondering over practicality vs fashion and I couldn't resist a test run ( after dark)
1. The braces with the high waist trousers are supremely practical and comfortable, no constant tucking in of shirt, no exposed lower back when bending, no restricted stomach for those of us not as slim as we might be. button flies were a bit inconvenient though
2. The long overcoat stops soaking wet thighs and knees that modern coats/macs allow plus it keeps your legs warm
3. The hat stops rain from trickling down your neck and keeps the sun out of your eyes and keep your head warm
I wonder how many other things have fallen out of use that were designed by sensible people for practical use??
