Does anyone know if this contraption still exists? It allowed you to cross the River Balvaig, near Balquhidder. Getting on it with bike was fairly easy, but getting off was interesting - even with someone on the bank. It was a case of bike on shoulder with one foot on the bank and one on the ferry, and a widening, wet gulf below...

Almost certainly not.

There's nothing marked on the OS map, there's a bridge at Balquhidder, and no roads or tracks approaching the river bank on opposite sides between there and the next bridge.

Andrew, as I recall, this gave access to the bed of an old railway which used to run along the west bank of Loch Lubnaig to the Falls of Leny, near Callander.

This is interesting, but the only reference I can find is to a temporary ferry provided whilst a bridge was being replaced.
Thanks snorri, I had a feeling that this might be the case. Not as much fun of course, but in todays litigation-fuelled climate you can well imagine the outcome should bike and passenger fall into the drink.
