"24 Feb 11There has been an accident on the roundabout.

2011-02-24 (10:44) : Old Street is closed westbound at the junction with Great Eastern Street due to an accident on the Old Street Roundabout. Traffic travelling southbound on City Road is being diverted eastbound onto Old Street. Traffic is slow moving westbound back onto Commercial Street towards the Aldgate One Way System. and eastbound on City Road back to the towards Shoreditch HIgh Street and eastbound onto City Road to Pentonville Road. The A10 is also slow moving southbound back to Dunston Road. Expect delays."

it could be one, it's just what he was saying. I hope its a least number as possible. Fingres crossed for her. (had to tell a white van driver he was a wan*er this morning too btw, and the other day wanted to throatle a cyclist who zoomed out of a side street without looking, into the path of a car, who had to serve out the way of him. grr)

"This unfortunate incident shows just how dangerous cycling on London streets really is. It's a miracle there aren't more accidents like this. Venturing out on two wheels in London is tantamount to playing Russian roulette. Until there are proper cycle lanes on ALL London roads, for goodness sake use public transport. Anyone can get on a bike and mix with London traffic - no test, no insurance. Although many people don't like to admit it, cyclists are a darn nuisance and, not only that, they are endangering not just their own lives but the lives of others. Put the bike back in the shed until we have proper cycle lanes, folks - for all our sakes. "

Oh Jeez what a stupid comment from that person, lets just accept what the Daily Fail says and use public transport.

Some people on twitter are saying that two cyclists were involved, like you say Simon fingers crossed.

yes, i googled his profile name and he is one of those prats who has a view and "strong" opinion on everything. I guess he has too much time on his hands and spends the day leaving comments on the site just to wind up people. hey-ho.

Having walked past that roundabout many times on my way from Old Street station into Shoreditch I must say I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to tackle it on a bike! The speed people go round it is totally inappropriate.

I ride round that roundabout regularly and I find it's more about the planning than any particular bravery, at least in east->west and west->east directions. Great Eastern St itself is imo worse: two narrow lanes, many drivers want to overtake at inappropriate speed and without leaving any space, and taxis/minicabs often stop in the left hand lane to let passengers in or out.

Approaching from the east, the bus lane means that many drivers who want to turn left are in the wrong lane to do so and will left hook you if given a chance - get well ahead in the ASL and start off as soon as you see amber.

Approaching from the west, ignore the ASL feeder lane and stay in the left-hand traffic lane. The feeder is narrow, bends to the left, and places the cyclist next to a tall concrete kerb with a railing above it. It should be removed or made about 3x as wide, but in the meantime just don't go there. The lights in this direction are timed so that if you set off on green when entering the roundabout, the lights controlling the southbound entrance will also turn green as you approach them

What a twonk (but I would like to see more cycling infrastructure)

Best wishes to the lady involved.

sounds like it is best to avoid this roundabout at all costs. Have to ask yourself, is it worth it?

I negotiate this roundabout both ways most days. I can't say that I find it a problem. In fact the biggest problem is the cyclists jumping the lights primarily westbound onto the RAB from Great Eastern St and I've seen a number of near misses because of this.

Simon, I think you are going down a very dangerous metaphorical route with that line of argument!

There is a risk of getting things out of proportion after one accident. Remember that most cyclists who ride round it do live to tell the tale! It's not a regular route for me but I've been round it a good few times.

If you live or work nearby, it may not be easily or conveniently avoidable. I don't think that there should be no-go areas or sections of road for cyclists - least of all self-imposed ones.

Remember 'safety in numbers'. If people avoid it, it makes it more dangerous for those who do use it. That can't be what you are advocating?

or heading from City road onto RAB going east, that gets RLJed a lot too. used it a few times on commute from Marlebone to Leytonstone.
