Old XTR shifter playing up

I have a very old Orange E something with XTR shifters. When its on the bike work stand I can cycle through all the gears no problem, but on the road my front shifter plays up and just will not shift to the largest front cog. When I try, its as if there is no cable connected to the shifter, it just moves back and forth with absolute zero tension. Any ideas? Cheers.

Spray lots of GT85 into the mechanism, and change the cable. If that doesn't work it could well be toast. STI's either work and work, or fail.

There could be muck in the ratchet. Don't start stripping it down though.

I had this on an lx shifter after doing up my mtb earlier this year. Ut was the ratchet that was not engaging properly, and I just replaced it and the new one works with no problems.
