It's a sound plan. Sell your bike, because you wouldn't be riding it over winter anyway, throw the money from that in the bank, and over the winter, save up some cash so you can have a better bike next year.

The drawback is you loose half a years cycling.

Winters only a quarter of the year though.

If the bike in question is the 'good bike', you might not ride it over the winter anyway. A lot of people switch to their winter bikes instead. So to sell the summer bike and save up while riding the winter bike for an even better summer bike makes a lot of sense.

My geared best bike goes away when the clocks change, I ride my fixed all through the winter, the geared bike comes out again in the spring, your plan is a good one, but my geared bike is only three years old and hasn't done much more than 5000 miles so it will be a while before I buy a replacement, the way I read the original post was that the op stopped riding for the winter.

So you buy a new bike, ride it over the summer, sell it in autumn for a fraction of the purchase price, stop riding in winter and lose your fitness, and buy a new, usually worse spec, bike the next Spring.

That's a well thought out plan.
